Talks possible only after rebels ‘purged’: Syria FM

Posted by seumasach on August 26, 2012

The Syrian “rebels” have consistently opposed the Annan Plan, indeed any negotiations with the Assad government. They seek nothing short of the complete destabilisation of Syria. In this they are supported by the benighted souls of the West. Who therefore, can dispute the realism of the approach of the Syrian government outlined below, a policy whose foundation is simply national survival as opposed to the national destruction we have seen in Libya

Daily Star

TEHRAN: Syria’s regime will only look at negotiating with the opposition after “purging” rebels from the country, Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said on Sunday, according to talks with a visiting Iranian official reported by Iran’s IRNA news agency.

NATO forces armed, funded, trained, and even provided air support to Syria for Libyan terrorists emanating out of Libya’s eastern Cyrenaica region – most notably Benghazi which had served as the premier international terrorist recruiting ground in the world, according to the US Army’s Combating Terrorism Center, producing a percentage per capita of militants outstripping even that of Saudi Arabia.

Cherchez l’erreur !

François Hollande’s presidential campaign largely consisted of denunciations of the catastrophic policies and garishness of his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy. He pledged that change would come immediately. One hundred days after his election, Hollande may have altered the style of rule but not the policies which remain the same even as France sinks ever deeper into crisis.

I wrote yesterday for Asia Times that in Muslim politics such as the event of the summit meeting of the Organization of Islamic Conference that was held in Jeddah last week over the Syrian crisis, it is invariably the case that the sub-texts turn out to be more important than the narrative.

Two steps forward, one step back. This is how this week’s Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Mecca could be characterized in terms of Iran-Saudi relations.

A Saudi overture to Iran

Posted by seumasach on August 17, 2012

M.K.Bhadrakumar

Asia Times

18th August, 2012

The narrative could not have been simpler – Saudi Arabia has taken its cold war with Iran, which is being fought on the beaches, in the air and in the hills of the Middle East, to the great arena of the Muslim ummah. And Iran has badly lost in the tournament.
