A long time in the making and announced by François Hollande six months in advance, the French intervention in Mali was portrayed as an emergency decision in response to dramatic developments. This scheme aims not only at seizing Mali’s gold and uranium, but more especially at paving the way for the destabilization of Algeria.
Appetite comes with eating“, says the proverb. After having re-colonised the Ivory Coast and Libya, then having attempted to get a hold on Syria, France is now setting its sights on Mali in order to take Algeria from behind.

Always on hand when needed, cameleontic jihadists serve as enemies in Mali, friends in Syria, and air force in Libya.
In today’s New York Times, Steven Erlanger justifies the French intervention in Mali on these grounds:
• It responds to “a direct request from a legitimate government.”
• It combats “the spread of radical Islamists, some of them foreign jihadists, strongly connected to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.”

President Obama effectively announces the end of the Syria destabilisation campaign
Telegraph

Killing Osama bin Laden (or rather, signing off on the ongoing military operation that killed him) might have given Barack Obama a great electoral pitch, but what exactly did it accomplish for the security of the United States and its interests? Al-Qaeda is back – big time.

The shift in US policy is now clear. Realism has dictated that Assad will not be overthrown in Syria and that the euro will not collapse. By relaunching the “war on terror” against Al Qaeda Washington signals a diplomatic settlement in Syria and , at the same time, seeks to reforge its alliance with Europe and strengthen NATO.Hollande’s Mali campaign and Cameron’s travails over Europe both flow directly from Washington’s new stance.
Guardian

The outgoing US defence secretary, Leon Panetta, has said there must be a fundamental change in the transatlantic alliance, as the west faces challenging global threats, including that from al-Qaida terrorists.

“How on earth has France sided with islamists to commit mass murder in Libya and Syria? Under the false pretext of protecting civilians, France has returned to colonialism. For Andre Chamy, France should not betray French ideals and the values of the left, he should change direction.”

Easy walking distance from this observer’s hotel near the city center, the Damascus Opera House, the site of yesterday’s Presidential address, was inaugurated in May of 2004 by the President and his wife,
completing a project of his late father, Hafez, who actually planned the
opera house in detail, but which had been put on hold since the late 1970’s.
Located off Umayyad Square, the multipurpose culture center complex,
presented its most recent opera, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s, The Marriage
of Figaro, just months before the current crisis erupted.
