The level of lunacy we’ve reached can be measured by the brouhaha over the presence of Russian photographers in the Oval Office during Sergey Lavrov’s visit: no US photographers were allowed, but the Russians somehow got in and the Paranoid Brigade went into overdrive. They may have planted “bugs” there! No, this wasn’t nutjob Louise Mensch, the queen of the Russia-haters, but “former intelligence officials,” including the former deputy director of the CIA, David Cohen.

Still revelling in the glory of having been informed in advance of Trump’s airstrikes on Syria, the British leadership, characteristically, is placing it’s most fervent hopes on further military action against the man who stands between stability and the descent of Syria into the kind of chaos we engendered in Libya. I don’t know- they are simply incorrigible! We must hope that Trump turns out to be a disappointment to them for all his bluff and bluster.

“The U.S. side is ready to develop relations with China based on the principle of no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, said Tillerson.”
As Trump seeks to actively undermine the Atlantic Alliance with both the UK and the EU, he appears set for a closer engagement with China. This approach closely corresponds to US national interests since only through partnership with China can the US rebuild it’s infrastructure and industrial base.

In what can only be seen as a development invested with symbolism — at least in its sheer timing – Russian president’s special envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev is traveling to Tehran today. Prima facie, Lavrentiev will hold consultations with Iran’s powerful Secretary to the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, on the eve of the first meeting in Astana tomorrow of the ‘trilateral mechanism’ of Russia, Iran and Turkey regarding the monitoring of ceasefire and separation of opposition groups from the extremist groups.
