As the Obama administration has parried pressures to enmesh the United States more deeply in Syria’s murderous civil war, last year’s high tide of international insistence on Bashar al-Assad’s departure seems to be receding. One sign has been in eroding vote tallies in the United Nations. Another is the very public rethinking of Syria policy one hears here in Tunisia, where the Arab uprisings began.

David Cameron: Talks with Taliban should have begun a decade ago

“Details of Britain’s potential long-term role emerged during Mr Cameron’s visit. He backed up the view of Lieutenant-General Nick Carter, deputy commander of Nato’s forces, who said earlier today that the west should have opened political talks with the Taliban a decade ago.”

Kerry rules out military action in Syria

For all the huff and puff the Americans understand that the options they face are regional, possibly global war or the Geneva II peace conference. Uncharacteristically all options are not on the table.

More than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria’s uprising, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The death toll from the civil war is now 100,191 people, it said.
Violence raged as US Secretary of State John Kerry ruled out a military solution for Syria and called for a settlement based on last year’s Geneva peace plan.
