Georgia, Washington and Moscow: a Nuclear Geopolitical Poker Game

Posted by seumasach on July 14, 2008

The obsessive, sustained propaganda campaign against Russia must have some focal point: this looks like it.

Global Research

The Caucasus Republic of Georgia as nations go does not appear to be a major global player. Yet Washington has invested huge sums and organized to put its own despot, Mikhail Saakashvili, in the Presidency in order to close a nuclear NATO iron ring around Russia. Now US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in Tbilisi making sharp statements against Moscow for supporting the independent neighbor states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, in essence blaming Moscow for an imminent war Washington has incited in order to bring Georgia into NATO by the December NATO Summit.

Newfound Iraqi confidence pleases, worries US

Posted by seumasach on July 14, 2008

As long as the Iraqi army is engaged in conflict with the resistance, the US presence can, conceivably, be justified as a back-up. But what if the army and the resistance start to reach an understanding? This, it seems, is precisely what happened when army was sent into Basra to deal with Sadr’s men and ended up fraternising with them. That this was the moment that broke the back of the US/UK occupation, is confirmed by the US hopes, expressed below, that hostilities between Sadr and the army will recommence.  Contrary to the hopes of Western imperialists and their stooges, the Iraq nation, rather than fragmenting, is cohering in opposition to the occupation. It is the structures of power in the US/UK which will be fragmenting!

A double-edged sword: US generals welcome Iraqi military’s new confidence, but also worry

Wajih Hameed is an Iraqi general with an attitude.

With a satisfied look, he listened as a subordinate officer explained to the deputy commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad how he plans to reposition his troops in the coming weeks.

“Before, they would have asked us to propose a plan” in such a circumstance and then would have accepted it with little argument, said Brig. Gen. Will Grimsley, who led a group of American officers to Hameed’s office on Thursday. “Now they are telling us how they will do it,” he said in an interview afterward.

Maliki continues to press for a “withdrawal-schedule” despite the talks having been “scaled back”

Posted by seumasach on July 14, 2008

“The American soldiers should be based in agreed camps outside the cities and population areas.”

It sounds more like hostages than occupiers: but, anyway, anything’s better then them coming home where they might start venting their anger on the chicken hawks

Sunday,13th July, 2008(Missing Links)

WaPo this morning (Sunday July 13) says the Bush administration has scaled back to trying to negotiate an “interim” agreement insofar as its military presence and operations in Iraq are concerned, having finally realized the solidity of Iraqi opposition to the idea of open-ended American presence, and the difficulty of negotiating a withdrawal schedule.

How the British security forces are helping a killer spy to rebuild his life

Posted by seumasach on July 14, 2008

“In addition, the FRU source said he believed there was little real will by the government to go down the path of seeking truth and reconciliation in Ulster because of what skeletons it would bring out of the cupboard”

History repeats itself: as after the Parnell enquiry in the 1880s, the extent of British intelligence penetration of Republican organisations is an embarrasment to both sides. This, presumably, is why the Bloody Sunday enquiry has not reported and, presumably, never will.

Neil Mackay

Sunday Herald

14th July, 2008

MI5 HAS rebuilt the life of a “killer spy” who was the British Army’s highest- ranking double agent at the heart of the IRA, and a man implicated in dozens of murders.

Freddie Scappaticci was exposed by the Sunday Herald in May 2003 as the infamous double agent codenamed Stakeknife. The Sunday Herald has now uncovered how Scappaticci has made millions in a taxpayer-funded resettlement package which was put in place after his cover was blown.

‘Dodgy Dossier’ on Zimbabwe crushed

Philip Murombedzi

Sat, 12 Jul 2008 10:22:00 +0000 Zimbabwe Guardian

WHAT exactly is happening to the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown? In June he suffered a humiliation local election defeat which left his party with one of the worst election outcomes in decades. Then came the Mayor of London election which Labour candidate Ken Livingstone dismally lost to ‘cartoon character’ Boris Johnson. Yesterday his ‘dodgy sanctions dossier’ calling for sanctions on Zimbabwe was crushed by Russia and China. Read the rest of this entry »

Intervene? Haven’t Britain and America already done enough damage?

Posted by seumasach on July 13, 2008

Here, rather surprisingly, is an organisation of the British Left which reveals the reality of Britian’s war on Zimbabwe and takes a stand in defence of Zimbabwean sovereignty.

Workers

July 2008 Issue

In all the coverage of Zimbabwe, it is rarely noted that the US and British states have been imposing punitive economic sanctions on the country since 2001. Western academics and journalists instead portray the crisis in Zimbabwe solely as the result of the land reform or of Mugabe’s mismanagement.

U.S., Iraq scale down negotiations over forces

Any long-term deal on extended presence will wait for next administration

Karen DeYoung

MSNBC

13th July, 2008

U.S. and Iraqi negotiators have abandoned efforts to conclude a comprehensive agreement governing the long-term status of U.S troops in Iraq before the end of the Bush presidency, according to senior U.S. officials, effectively leaving talks over an extended U.S. military presence there to the next administration.

UK/USA/MDC: Bandaging the Truth

Posted by alfied on July 12, 2008

The Zimbabwe Herald

May the good Lord please help us! We seem to be living through an evil hour. Take this white woman journalist called Christina Lamb. I happen to have met her once. Quite unattractive and rather indifferent to femininity, she comes across as quite feeble and charitable, totally foreign to any harm to anyone, least of all a country. Until you discover her deadly side beneath this misleading patina of fragility. To the Empire, she is John Simpson’s female equivalent in print journalism. Or better still Chris McGreal’s female equivalent. She is M-16 affiliated; she gets her cue from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Once the Empire defines the enemy, she builds formidable propaganda against those the British establishment seek to destroy. Alongside the other two, and joined by a youthful intern at the Telegraph, David Blair, she is part of Britain’s propaganda frontline. This is a very useful brief to understanding what follows. Bush outfoxed in the Iraqi sands

WASHINGTON – Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s demand for a timetable for complete United States military withdrawal from Iraq, confirmed on Tuesday by his National Security Adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie, has signaled the almost certain defeat of the George W Bush administration’s aim of establishing a long-term military presence in the country. Africa Advocacy and The Zimbabwe Factor

Posted by smeddum on July 11, 2008

blackcommentator.com

Like some BlackCommentator.com commentaries of the last two weeks, accounts of the situation in Zimbabwe by Africa advocacy organizations are virtually identical to those of corporate media, UK and US government officials. Solidarity With The People of Zimbabwe by Nunu Kidane, the quote by featured cartoonist Tony Namate published in the June 26th issue No. 283, and Bill Fletcher’s commentary titled, Mugabe Sworn in Officially…Simultaneously Loses his Legacy, in last week’s issue No. 284 all depict Zimbabwe as descending to hell in a hand basket at the hands of a despotic Mugabe.
