DOHA: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad yesterday called for developing an alternative economy in the face of the “total failure” of socialism and capitalism.

Addressing the plenary session of the International Conference on Financing for Development here, Ahmadinejad hit out against the “capitalist bloc”.

“Knowing (the problem) is the best way to address the problem. The capitalist bloc is facing an impasse in its philosophical, cultural and economic arena”, he said. Read the rest of this entry »

Did Polish air force officers die for opposing missile shield?

Posted by seumasach on November 27, 2008

As we put it at the time: “I would imagine that full pressure is being exerted by the US/UK”. Could this be what “full pressure” amounted to?

It is evident that the anti-Russian propaganda in Poland reaches new heights. After the publicity campaign for the film “Katyn” (in the media I find a short information that all soldiers of Polish Army were compelled to see his film, as the part of their “cultural training”), the construction of the American “antimissile shield” become once again the propaganda tool, serving to stir both anti-Russian and anti-European emotions among common people. Only two weeks ago the newly elected in last September, Polish government was declaring officially its hardly concealed hostility towards this “shield” as the USA-owned, dangerous for Polish citizenry, military installation on Polish territory. And than suddenly, on the February 1st, Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radek Sikorski (a member of the American Enterprise Institute, by the way) suddenly changed his mind and inclined, during his visit in Washington, to all pressures exercised by White House. This American “master of Eastern Europe” is wishing to establish in Poland not only the (anti)missile base, but also several subsequent, US Army owned, military bases. This supposedly in order to protect Poland from Russian hegemonistic drive.

Obama’s “left” cheerleaders and the right-wing transition

22nd November, 2008

The increasingly right-wing character of the transition being organized in preparation for President-Elect Barack Obama’s inauguration in January has elicited expressions of concern from the middle-class “left.” This milieu, whose views are reflected in publications like the Nation magazine, played a significant role during the election campaign in promoting Obama’s candidacy and the Democratic Party as vehicles for fundamental political and social change.

The struggle for influencing Barack Obama’s foreign policy agenda has begun in right earnest. The maneuvering by influential establishment figures – including Congressional voices, Obama advisors and even military officials – who are projecting incumbent Robert Gates as secretary of defense in the incoming administration highlights the pressures working on the president-elect.

The Empire is over!

Ever since 9/11 and the subsequent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, the world has been suspended between two possible outcomes: on the one hand, a reinforced US hegemony and on the other a sort of counter-globalisation movement at the core of which lay the reassertion of national sovereignty in the face of empire. Even as the coalition got bogged down in both Iraq and Afghanistan, the terrifying possibility remained of an escalation towards global war provoked by an attack on Iran, and at certain points this scenario may have been a lot closer to becoming a reality than the wider world realized. In addition, the collapse of the Anglo-American financial system opened the possibility of a wave of financial chaos spreading out from the imperial heartlands destabilising the world economy and inaugurating a neo-feudal dark age. The aggressive and arrogant stance of Washington and London and doubts about European leadership, in particular, left one fearing what further cards the empire had left to play. That has now been clarified: they have none.

On the eve of the United States presidential elections, a landmark visit to Tehran by the head of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has been widely regarded in the Persian Gulf region as a major diplomatic overture toward Tehran by the US-backed oil sheikdoms.

The Audacity of Hype-Dissent in the age of Obama

Posted by seumasach on November 13, 2008

Antiwar.com

12th november, 2008

The Obama bandwagon is moving fast and furious, rolling over the few remaining pockets of dissent even as it prepares to take power. The mainstream media, particularly on television, has lostall sense of objectivity and proportion, and their reporting of the president-elect’s doings has taken on a distinctly Soviet air. “Our Glorious Leader Picks the White House Dog” is the emblematic headline of a servile fourth estate. The political atmosphere is positively eerie: amid calls for “unity” and attacks on “toxic” language that is “divisive,” there is an odd uniformity of thought similar to the virtual unanimity that gripped the nation in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Groupthink is all the rage, and the media has joined in the fun. Due to this love-fest, they’re oblivious to the warning signs that worry us few and scattered skeptics. They somehow missed the Dear Leader’s call for a civilian “national security force,” for example, one that is “just as well-funded” and “just as powerful” as the U.S. military.
