A new paradigm for a post-imperial world

Diego Garcia bunker-busters meant to threaten Iran

Posted by seumasach on March 16, 2010

In its dotage the empire’s diplomacy is reduced to making threats, a sign of growing weakness. Unfortunately, however, it cannot be assumed that they are idle threats: as long as the Wall Street/City/MIC mob are in control we are not safe from the madness of a greater war. On the positive side the wider world is fat awakening to the threat: the urgent need now is for a genuine opposition to crystallise in the US/UK. That may be emerging in the US around figures such as Cynthia McKinney, Ron Paul and Cindy Sheehan. Can we in the UK take our cue from them? More broadly, can we grasp the potential within the emerging multipolar world, recognising both our own imperialism and the fact that opposition to it necessarily takes the form of the re-emergence of countries such as Russia, Brazil and India as genuinely independent, sovereign nations.

NATO chief tries to quell east European security fears

Posted by seumasach on March 13, 2010

Here is confirmation of John Feffer’s scenario in which NATO is riven by a division between a mainly anti-Russian role within Europe and the forging of NATO as a global player. In fact, there is no contradiction, NATO wants to go for Russia and China via Central Asia. However, this is enough to arouse fears of dinosaur Polish politicians still reliving their experiences with the Soviet Union and fearful of NATO betrayal despite their shameful grovelling before them.

Daily Times

WARSAW: NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen tried on Friday to assuage east Europeans’ concerns that the alliance does not fully safeguard their security in the face of a more assertive Russia.

A titanic power struggle in Kabul

Posted by seumasach on March 13, 2010

As befits the oligarchical mindset, US/UK seek to weaken central power, and therefore sovereignty, in Afghanistan thereby maintaining it as a base for operations to destabilise Russia and China; “the great game for the containment of Russia, China and Iran is about to commence in earnest”.

Asia Times

13th March, 2010

The flurry of diplomatic activity in Kabul during the past week heralded the opening shots of a titanic power struggle, the outcome of which will largely determine the contours of an Afghan settlement.

In what is shaping up as a multi-layered power struggle, the principal protagonists are the United States and Britain, Pakistan, Iran and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The Rogue Nation

In spite of the fact that the United States faces no enemy anywhere in the world capable of opposing it on a battlefield, the Defense budget for 2011 will go up 7.1 percent from current levels.  A lot of the new spending will be on drones, America’s latest contribution to western civilization, capable of surveilling large areas on the ground and delivering death from the skies. It is a peculiarly American vision of warfare, with a “pilot” sitting at a desk half a world away and pressing a button that can kill a target far below.  Hygienic and mechanical, it is a bit like a video game with no messy cleanup afterward. The recently released United States Quadrennial Defense Review reports how the Pentagon will be developing a new generation of super drones that can stay airborne for long periods of time and can strike anywhere in the world and at any time to kill America’s enemies.  The super drones will include some that can fly at supersonic speeds and others that will be large enough to carry nuclear weapons.  Some of the new drones will be designed for the navy, able to take off from aircraft carriers and project US power to even more distant hot spots.  Drones are particularly esteemed by policymakers because as they are unmanned and can fly low to the ground they can violate someone’s airspace “accidentally” without necessarily resulting in a diplomatic incident.

China backlash at US rights report

Posted by smeddum on March 12, 2010

aljazeera.net

There is a fuller report here.
The real ‘elephant in the room’ for the Anglo American right and left being “US … using human rights as a political tool to interfere in other countries’ political affairs”. It is a minority in what Jim Willie calls the “Anglosphere” who do not cheerlead imperialism. There is also the sophistry of the’ two wrongs do not make a right’ argument. The most usual form of this is paying lip service to human rights abuses in the US and UK while focusing on the countries that the corporate media highlight and reify these very hypocritical attacks that have only one purpose, to bolster US aggression throughout the world.

Marjah, the city that never was

Asia Times

10th March, 2010

WASHINGTON – For weeks, the United States public followed the biggest offensive of the Afghanistan war against what it was told was a “city of 80,000 people” as well as the logistical hub of the Taliban in that part of Helmand. That idea was a central element in the overall impression built up in February that Marjah was a major strategic objective, more important than other district centers in Helmand.

China Snubs Israeli Calls for Iran Sanctions

Posted by seumasach on March 7, 2010

American Free Press

March, 2010

The prime minister of contract murder, Binyamin Netanyahu, was not long permitted to rejoice over the agreement to sanction Iran which he had wrested from the Russian leadership. A few days later, China made it clear that it would in no case help to carry out such sanctions. Consequently, Netanyahu believed it necessary to pay a visit to the Chinese leadership, in order to bring them on course through an Israeli word of command.
