Poland: Putin’s speech won’t please everyone

Posted by seumasach on April 9, 2010

Dmitry Babich

RIA Novosti

7th April, 2010

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s speech was broadcast live by Polish television, radio and the Internet news sites. A translation into Polish appeared on the Internet soon after.

For the first time since Russian was dropped from the curriculum of Polish schools and universities in 1992, Russian speakers were worth their weight in gold in Poland. People listened intently to Putin’s every word and scrutinized his every move: “Putin bowed his head to the Poles murdered at Katyn”; “Putin said that the crimes of totalitarianism cannot be justified.”

The official U.S. response to the bombings has been to condemn the violence and “stand with” Russia, though support in these matters rarely extends beyond statements for the press. Beyond public diplomacy, what policy line does Washington actually pursue in relation to the Caucasus?

China backlash at US rights report

Posted by smeddum on March 12, 2010

aljazeera.net

There is a fuller report here.
The real ‘elephant in the room’ for the Anglo American right and left being “US … using human rights as a political tool to interfere in other countries’ political affairs”. It is a minority in what Jim Willie calls the “Anglosphere” who do not cheerlead imperialism. There is also the sophistry of the’ two wrongs do not make a right’ argument. The most usual form of this is paying lip service to human rights abuses in the US and UK while focusing on the countries that the corporate media highlight and reify these very hypocritical attacks that have only one purpose, to bolster US aggression throughout the world.

Voltairenet

15th February, 2010

In less than a week, NATO has unveiled its ambitions. The Alliance has been enlisting one by one, and more or less coercibly, all countries in Europe, in the Middle East and Oceania in the open-ended war in Afghanistan. Concurrently, on the pretext of responding to an ostensible threat from Iran, NATO is deploying an interceptor nuclear missile system on Russia’s borders which overturns the strategic balance with Moscow and calls into question the principle of progressive nuclear disarmament. Russia, on its part, feels directly targeted and is taking urgent measures to revamp its alliances and put its armament programmes back on track.
