Iran in a dilemma over Libya

Posted by seumasach on March 14, 2011

“Assuming that the tides are turning in favor of Gaddafi, whose forces have retaken some of the rebel strongholds in the past few days, the whole noise about a no-fly zone may soon evaporate under the “realism” that may be a remedy too late.”

“future historians may tell the story of Libya’s 2011 revolt as a unique story of how the West saved the regime by actually threatening it.”

“In turn, this raises serious questions about the soundness of the pro-Gaddafi stance adopted by various leftist governments, such as Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela, and leftist groups in the US and Europe, who have focused on the threats of US interventionism via a no-fly zone as their number one priority, often buying Gaddafi’s propaganda about the “rebels” as a combination of pro-West armed monarchists, Central Intelligence Agency-trained, etc.”

The ongoing crisis in Libya has presented Iran with a vexing policy dilemma. Last week’s decision by the Arab League (AL) to call for a no-fly zone in Libya has been greeted with a mixture of a shy nod plus a deep frown in Tehran.

Libyan govt. troops defect in Misratah

Posted by seumasach on March 13, 2011

The West has forced Gaddafi to stand and  fight, giving him no way out with their legal moves against him. Their posturing in support of the uprising has only served to help him with his claim that foreign forces are behind it all. Despite that Gaddafi will lose the struggle for hearts and minds through the brutality of his attacks on Libyan cities.

Subverting the Arab revolution

The Arab revolution poses a mortal threat to the Anglo-American-Zionist world system. This system has been based over several decades on the petrodollar which replaced the gold backed dollar of the Bretton Woods system. It is not that the new democratic Arab nations will withdraw oil from global markets creating a supply crisis. They would have no cause to do that, but, from a strictly commercial point of view, they would not wish to sell their oil for dollars, or pounds, of course. More likely, they would prefer to receive Yuan or Euros. Hence, the reign of the dollar as the global reserve currency would come to an end, its current slow demise giving way to sudden death.

As the usual suspects started howling for Western intervention in the Libyan revolution – in the name of “humanitarianism,” of course – the objects of their concern made it clear they didn’t want or need any such “help.”

4th March, 2011

The upheavals across the Middle East have come to Colonel Qaddafi ‘s Libya and unlike his fellow rulers to his east, he is struggling to hold on to his iron rule. Much of the population opposes the colonel and many parts of the military and state have gone over to the opposition. The colonel retains control over security forces and army units commanded by his sons, but in the public he only has the support of the few people who benefited from his petro-largesse and a few tribes whose members have been well placed in the security forces and army.
