Global Research, June 13, 2009
The city of Yakaterinburg, Russia’s largest east of the Urals, may become known not only as the death place of the tsars but of American hegemony too – and not only where US U-2 pilot Gary Powers was shot down in 1960, but where the US-centered international financial order was brought to ground.
Challenging America will be the prime focus of extended meetings in Yekaterinburg, Russia (formerly Sverdlovsk) today and tomorrow (June 15-16) for Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and other top officials of the six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The alliance is comprised of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrghyzstan and Uzbekistan, with observer status for Iran, India, Pakistan and Mongolia. It will be joined on Tuesday by Brazil for trade discussions among the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China). Read the rest of this entry »

Ahmadinejad: Blair apologized to Iran
Posted by smeddum on June 4, 2009

During a TV debate with his rival Mir-Hossein Mousavi which was broadcast live on Wednesday, he defended his foreign policy and said Blair’s letter had prompted his government to release the 15 British sailors who were captured by Iranian forces after trespassing in Iran’s waters in 2007.
“The sailors were captured and after the issue reached a climax, Mr. Blair sent a letter of apology. He said they would change their policy toward Iran. The related documents are in the Foreign Ministry … I believe that one of the most beautiful things the Islamic Republic did was the release of the sailors,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

The Russian foreign minister disappoints US hopes by clarifying that its military cooperation with Iran complies with international law.
“These issues … are decided exclusively within the law and Russian national regulations… We are supplying non-destabilizing, defensive weapons,” Sergei Lavrov said following a meeting with his US counterpart Hillary Clinton in Geneva.
“We fully take into account concerns voiced by our US and Israeli partners and favor intensification of work on proposals made by the 5-plus-one group, which include … the start of equal talks with Iran and other regional states to ensure common security,” he added.

US, EU seek Iran help on Afghanistan

The new US administration reportedly plans to invite Iran to an international conference to discuss the worsening Afghan security situation.
“Iran will be invited to attend,” Reuters quoted an unnamed senior US official as saying on Thursday.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday that Washington was looking to engage Tehran on Afghanistan.
Clinton also unveiled that there had been consultations between Iran and the US ambassador on a daily basis regarding Afghanistan just after the US military toppled the Taliban in 2001.
Following seven years of occupation and the failure of some 70,000 US and NATO-led troops to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan, Washington has called on the war-ravaged country’s neighbors to help deal with the situation.
