British elite snared in Africa coup trial

Posted by seumasach on June 18, 2008

There is no doubt bigger players were involved and not just in the British elite: Spain sent a naval taskforce to support the coup

Ventura County Star By Lydia Polgreen New York Times News Service Wednesday, June 18, 2008 DAKAR, Senegal — The plot to overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea in 2004 was so improbable, it sounded like something out of a tale from the tropics, too outlandish even for Graham Greene. NATO should collapse just like the USSR did, Putin believes

Posted by seumasach on June 18, 2008

Pravda

3rd June 2008

Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to France, which ended May 30, left European mass media in mixed feelings. Respectable newspapers, like Britain’s The Times or Switzerland’s Neue Zurcher Zeitung, wrote in their articles that Putin had received an inappropriate welcome in Paris, which did not match his official position of the prime minister. European journalists were surprised to see that Putin’s meeting with his French counterpart Francois Fillon was held without reporters. To crown it all, President Sarkozy invited Putin for private dinner.

The west’s ‘good war’ in Afghanistan has turned bad. A local solution, rather than a neocolonial one, is what’s needed

The Sunspot Enigma: The Sun is “Dead”—What Does it Mean for Earth?

Posted by seumasach on June 16, 2008

June 11, 2008

Daily Galaxy

Dark spots, some as large as 50,000 miles in diameter, typically move across the surface of the sun, contracting and expanding as they go. These strange and powerful phenomena are known as sunspots, but now they are all gone. Not even solar physicists know why it’s happening and what this odd solar silence might be indicating for our future.

From Munich to Kosovo – An Inconvenient Comparison

On June 9, 1999, the 78-day war that NATO waged on what was then Yugoslavia came to a close. Representatives of Yugoslav military and NATO signed an armistice in the Macedonian town of Kumanovo, paving the way for NATO’s takeover of the province. At the time, it was spun in the West as a victory for the Alliance – Yugoslav president Milosevic “caved” and “capitulated,” and his army was “forced” from Kosovo. Yet on paper, it was a defeat; Serbia had resisted ten times longer than anyone in Washington or Mons expected, and the terms of the Kumanovo treaty were much better for Belgrade than the disgraceful Rambouillet ultimatum, which NATO sought to impose at the beginning of the bombing. What was to be a purely NATO occupation became a UN mission (UNMIK) and Serbia’s territorial integrity was explicitly guaranteed by the UN resolution 1244.

What’s the Difference Between Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns? Lehman’s CEO Sits on the Board of NY Fed.

Posted by seumasach on June 16, 2008

Ellen Brown, June 14th, 2008(Web of Debt)

An earlier article by this author (“The Secret Bailout of JP Morgan”) summarized evidence presented by John Olagues, an expert in options trading, suggesting that JPMorgan, far from “rescuing” Bear Stearns, was actually its nemesis.1 The faltering investment bank was brought down, not by “rumors,” but by insider trading based on a plan drawn up much earlier. The deal was a lucrative one for JPM, handing the Wall Street megabank $55 billion in loans from the Federal Reserve (meaning ultimately the U.S. taxpayer). So how did JPM get away with it? Olagues notes the highly suspicious fact that JPM’s CEO James Dimon sits on the Board of the New York Federal Reserve.

Túpac Amaru Padre de la Emancipación Americana

Posted by seumasach on June 14, 2008

Source: Avizora

Ya en Cuzco con empeño
quieren sacudir, y es ley,
el yugo de ajeno rey
y reponer al que es dueño
¡Levantarse americanos!

Lehman and the liars

Posted by seumasach on June 14, 2008

By Chan Akya (Asia Times)

The travails at one of the smaller investment banks in the world, Lehman Brothers, this week helped to increase investor focus on the phalanx of lies that underpin valuations across financial markets. Since I last alluded to the potential problems of this firm (Cheap talk, pricey banks, Asia Times Online, June 5, 2008), events have moved rather quickly; its share price is down from around US$31 to Thursday’s close of $22.70.
