Three top scientists have once again contradicted the claim that a “consensus” exists about man-made global warming with research that indicates CO2 emissions actually cool the atmosphere, in addition to another peer-reviewed paper that documents how the IPCC overstated CO2’s effect on temperature by as much as 2000 per cent.

Jaws close in on Bernanke

Posted by seumasach on July 16, 2008

“No one who has wealth or assets in any form, in any currency, is safe – you might as well consider yourself as being at least knee-deep in the shark infested waters of the financial markets.”

By Julian Delasantellis

Asia Times

As he was winding down his days of dissoluteness and reprobation, the 4th century Christian philosopher Augustine of Hippo, commonly referred to as St Augustine, begged for just a few more rounds of divinely sanctioned debauchery. “Lord,” he cried out to the heavens, “Give me chastity and continence, but not quite yet.”

Currently, as a result of the ever-worsening crises in US housing finance, a crisis being illustrated by the absolute devastation of the shares in the US government’s semi-private semi-public secondary market mortgage wholesalers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and in the government seizing control of mortgage lender IndyMac in one of the largest bank failures in American history, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke must be raising higaze to the heavens for a similar entreaty.
“Lord, give me credibility as, and the ability to be, an inflation fighter – but not quite yet.”

The next big wave is breaking

Asia Times

17th July, 2008

The announcement by US Treasury secretary Henry Paulson, together with Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, that the US government will bail out the two largest guarantors of the country’s housing mortgage debt – Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – far from calming financial markets has confirmed what we have said repeatedly in this space: the financial tsunami that began in August 2007 in the relatively small “subprime” high-risk mortgage securitization market, far from being over, is only gathering momentum.

Posted by seumasach on July 16, 2008

22nd July, 2008

Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead on 22nd July 2005 at Stockwell tube station during a pre-planned police anti-terror operation.  Not a single police officer has faced any disciplinary action for the killing. This is despite a jury at the Old Bailey finding the Office of the Commissioner of the Metropolitan police guilty of ‘catastrophic errors’ at the health and safety trial in October last year.

3 years on, his family continue to tirelessly campaigning to find out all the circumstances into how Jean died and for justice and accountability.

Please join the family to mark the 3rd anniversary of his death on the 22nd July 2008 by attending one of the following events:

  •  At 9.45am a vigil outside Stockwell tube station to mark the exact moment Jean Charles was killed.

If you can only make one event we encourage people to come to the lunchtime event in parliament.

Five weddings and many funerals

Posted by seumasach on July 14, 2008

Tom Engelhardt

Asia Times

15th July, 2008

It was a tribal affair. Against a picture-perfect sunset, before a beige-colored cross and an altar made of the very Texas limestone that was also used to build her family’s “ranch”, veil-less in an Oscar de la Renta gown, the 26-year-old bride said her vows. More than 200 members of her extended family and friends were on hand, as well as the 14 women in her “house party”, who were dressed “in seven different styles of knee-length dresses in seven different colors that match[ed] the palette of … wildflowers – blues, greens, lavenders and pinky reds”.

Afterwards, in a white tent set in a grove of trees and illuminated by strings of lights, the father of the bride, George W Bush, danced with his daughter to the strains of You Are So Beautiful. The media were kept at arm’s length and the vows were private, but undoubtedly they included the phrase “till death do us part”.
That was early May of this year. Less than two months later, halfway across the world, another tribal affair was underway. The age of the bride involved is unknown to us, as is her name. No reporters were clamoring to get to her section of the mountainous backcountry of Afghanistan near the Pakistani border. We know almost nothing about her circumstances, except that she was on her way to a nearby village, evidently early in the morning, among a party 70-90 strong, mostly women, “escorting the bride to meet her groom as local tradition dictates”.

Georgia, Washington and Moscow: a Nuclear Geopolitical Poker Game

Posted by seumasach on July 14, 2008

The obsessive, sustained propaganda campaign against Russia must have some focal point: this looks like it.

F. William Engdal

Global Research

12th July, 2008

The Caucasus Republic of Georgia as nations go does not appear to be a major global player. Yet Washington has invested huge sums and organized to put its own despot, Mikhail Saakashvili, in the Presidency in order to close a nuclear NATO iron ring around Russia. Now US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in Tbilisi making sharp statements against Moscow for supporting the independent neighbor states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, in essence blaming Moscow for an imminent war Washington has incited in order to bring Georgia into NATO by the December NATO Summit.

Newfound Iraqi confidence pleases, worries US

Posted by seumasach on July 14, 2008

As long as the Iraqi army is engaged in conflict with the resistance, the US presence can, conceivably, be justified as a back-up. But what if the army and the resistance start to reach an understanding? This, it seems, is precisely what happened when army was sent into Basra to deal with Sadr’s men and ended up fraternising with them. That this was the moment that broke the back of the US/UK occupation, is confirmed by the US hopes, expressed below, that hostilities between Sadr and the army will recommence.  Contrary to the hopes of Western imperialists and their stooges, the Iraq nation, rather than fragmenting, is cohering in opposition to the occupation. It is the structures of power in the US/UK which will be fragmenting!

A double-edged sword: US generals welcome Iraqi military’s new confidence, but also worry

Wajih Hameed is an Iraqi general with an attitude.

With a satisfied look, he listened as a subordinate officer explained to the deputy commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad how he plans to reposition his troops in the coming weeks.

“Before, they would have asked us to propose a plan” in such a circumstance and then would have accepted it with little argument, said Brig. Gen. Will Grimsley, who led a group of American officers to Hameed’s office on Thursday. “Now they are telling us how they will do it,” he said in an interview afterward.
