Gordon Brown yesterday issued his strongest hint that British troops will start to quit Afghanistan by the end of next year.

In a major shift of strategy, the Prime Minister said a target to train up 134,000 Afghan soldiers will be brought forward by a year to December 2010.

He announced that cutting troop numbers was now ‘the basis of our strategy’.

Mr Brown spoke as two more soldiers’ bodies were flown home for burial. So far 212 soldiers have died in the conflict.

A Beekeeper’s thoughts on her bee losses

Posted by seumasach on August 31, 2009

By Marion Lang

May 2009
On mid-summer’s day in 1995 I was gifted a cast of bees by a local beekeeper.     They prospered from the start and in no time at all I found myself the proud owner of several hives.
A year or so later when varroa was found in the vicinity my bees were inspected by Sandy Lister.     I was given the all-clear but warned that my bees would probably have it within two years.
I fitted varroa floors to the hives for easy monitoring and in September 1998 I found my first mite.
Over the years I have used various treatments but only if I felt it was necessary.     Mite levels remained low and presented no significant problem.  The occasional bee showed signs of virus and for a spell I had a number of black hairless bees.   Some hives did not do as well as others but on the whole they still prospered.
In the late 1990s I began to notice environmental changes.    The lapwings once so abundant all but disappeared and the winter geese numbers dropped dramatically.

Dr Abdullah Abdullah, the “modern face” of Afghanistan, is a rare finished product to emerge out of the jihad of the 1980s – a handsome, nattily attired, English-speaking mujahideen spokesman who could evocatively bring to the Western drawing rooms the danger and the thrill of the Hindu Kush.

Japan on the brink of a new era

Posted by seumasach on August 30, 2009

“With the motto of yuai, Hatoyama says he hopes to leave behind parochial nationalism and jingoism and instead further develop the East Asian Community to the extent that it resembles an Asian version of the European Union. He also advocates a common Asian currency as a natural extension of the rapid economic growth in the region.”

Kosuke Takahashi

Asia Times

29th August, 2009

TOKYO – History sometimes throws up wonderful ironies: in Japan, a rising grandson is about to destroy his grandfather’s legacy.

With opinion polls suggesting a massive victory for his opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) in Sunday’s general election, Yukio Hatoyama is poised to become the next prime minister, replacing Taro Aso. This would mark a fundamental change of power in the country, ending the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP’s) near-perpetual one-party dominance since Hatoyama’s grandfather Ichiro created the LDP in 1955.

(NaturalNews) The United States of America is devolving into medical fascism and Massachusetts is leading the way with the passage of a new bill, the “Pandemic Response Bill” 2008, reportedly just passed by the MA state Senate and now awaiting approval in the House. This bill suspends virtually all Constitutional rights of Massachusetts citizens and forces anyone “suspected” of being infected to submit to interrogations, “decontaminations” and vaccines.
