Veterans Day arrives tomorrow, and with it, the anticipated harvest of heartbreaking anecdotes driving the press coverage and our ever wandering attention back to less desirable realities: the disfigured but persevering hero, the homeless warrior, the unemployable sergeant, the father or son or daughter who came home a stranger and cannot be reached.

In The Long Emergency (2005, Atlantic Monthly Press), I said that we ought to expect the federal government to become increasingly impotent and ineffectual – that this would be a hallmark of the times.  In fact, I said that any enterprise organized at the colossal scale would function poorly in years ahead, whether it was a government, a state university, a national chain retail company, or a giant midwestern farm.  It is characteristic of the compressive contraction our society faces that giant hypercomplex systems will wobble and fail. We should expect this.

Honeybees face towering threat from mobiles

Radiation from transmitters wipes out bee colonies which will affect food production: Study

The Pioneer

18th September, 2009

Studies in Kerala have brought out evidence to support the theory of colony collapse disorder (CCD) among honeybees due to bioactive microwave radiation from mobile phones and their relay towers, which leads to extensive disappearance of entire worker bee colonies. This could result in disruption in food production because most of the crops depend on bees for pollination.

False Flag Attacks in Argentina: 1992 and 1994

Coinciding with Thierry Meyssan’s earlier conclusions and with those of other Argentinian investigators [*], economist and globalization expert Adrian Salbuchi chronicles the events that shook Buenos Aires in 1992 and 1994, contouring their unmistakable false-flag profile and irrefutable Israeli footprint, and connecting them to a wider pattern of similar “terrorist attacks”. Far from being fortuitous, Salbuchi offers a coherent picture in which all these events tie in together, revealing the same web of complicity, and are consistent with a grand scheme for economic and military global domination better known as the “New World Order”.

‘Cronies and warlords’ wait in the wings

Posted by seumasach on November 9, 2009

“It is not in the interests of Afghanistan’s stabilization that a cabal of foreign countries – the US, Britain, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan – continues to hold the strings of conflict-resolution. Clearly, this is not the time for Britain’s “great game” maneuverings in pursuit of its lost glory as a world power.”

For a fleeting hour or two, a question hung in the rapidly chilling autumn air in the Hindu Kush: did British Prime Minister Gordon Brown speak last weekend at the behest of United States President Barack Obama or did he speak out of turn, as even experienced politicians are wont to? Then it went away. It really does not matter either way.

Ukraine In Lockdown Amidst Swine Flu Scare

Posted by seumasach on November 9, 2009

Martial law was effectively declared in the Ukraine last week by unpopular President Victor Yushchenko after an outbreak of what health officialsdescribed as flu and respiratory infections. The outbreak has reportedly already infected hundreds of thousands of people in the western regions of the country. In response, the office of the President on November 6 floated the idea of postponing the presidential election until May of next year.

The New American

8th November, 2009

Yushchenko claimed that “unlike similar epidemics in other countries, three pathogens of viral infections came to Ukraine at the same time: two of them are seasonal flu and the third is the A/H1N1.” He added that “such a combination of infections due to mutation may produce a new, even more aggressive virus,” that “the A/H1N1 virus is easily mutating,” and that “the virus has become particularly pathogenic.” However, some analysts have suggested the true culprit is in fact a political struggle among diverse factions and politicians vying for power.

Health officials reported on November 5 that 95 people have died of flu and respiratory infections due to the outbreak. So far only about 20 cases of swine flu have reportedly been confirmed in the country of about 40 million people. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that it is assuming that the outbreak was caused by the H1N1 swine flu virus. Several nations includingSlovakia have all but shut down border crossings with Ukraine in an attempt to contain the infections while the Ukrainian government appeals for international aid.

Ukrainian health officials on November 6 claimed on the ministry’s website that over 800,000 people had been infected with some sort of acute respiratory ailment, and that at least three deaths were linked to the swine flu. Some news reports have claimed the number of confirmed swine flu deaths is actually above 10. But the outbreak is showing signs of easing, according to the Deputy Health Minister.

However, the government still responded with a heavy hand. The “National Security and Defense Council should become the center of decision-making,” said Ukrainian President Yushchenko in astatement, referring to an executive body composed of the President, the Prime Minister, the Minster of Defense, the Foreign Minister, the chief of the security service, and the Minister of the Interior. “Failure to comply with its orders will immediately result in application to the law enforcement authorities…. For not a single moment you will be left alone by the state.”

A quarantine has been imposed on at least nine provinces of the country, while the government announced that all schools would be closed for at least three weeks due to the infections. Large public gatherings, churches, and even movie theaters have been banned temporarily, while the President is urging all citizens to be vaccinated and the criminal prosecution of resisters.

The President is also seeking to use the circumstances in a bid to squash political opposition and prosecute certain government officials for their alleged negligence in allowing citizens to travel and assemble. Though the World Health Organization has praised the draconian measures, many high-ranking Ukrainian officials including the Prime Minister have condemned the fear mongering and accompanying government response.

There is clearly a lot of uncertainty about the current situation in Ukraine, as evidenced by the contradictory news reports and official statements emanating from the country. But as the dust settles, the truth will hopefully rise to the surface. In the mean time, Ukrainian citizens should resist the tyrannical edicts being imposed upon them and demand that the presidential election be held as planned.

Update: Ukrainian president sees no need for swine flu state of emergency

http://www.nationalpost.com/todays-paper/story.html?id=2201592#ixzz0WN78OGdA
Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko said yesterday he did not see any reason to impose a state of emergency over the flu epidemic in the country. “No, there are no such reasons. I do not want the country to stand motionless and to limit its vital activity,” Mr. Yushchenko told the Ukrainian 5 TV channel. According to the Ukrainian health ministry, an epidemic of flu and respiratory infections has now taken 144 lives in the country, with 43,762 people hospitalized and more than 930,000 recorded ill since the start of the epidemic in the late October. The country has reported 32 cases of swine flu including 14 deaths connected with the H1N1 virus.

A line in the sand: Barack Obama’s treachery in the Middle East

Posted by seumasach on November 8, 2009

Uri Avnery

Redress

8th November, 2009

Uri Avnery argues that Barack Obama’s betrayal of his promise to seek a just resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has shown that he is absolutely no different from George W. Bush, and that is why Palestinian National Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has decided not to stand in the next Palestinian elections.

“…the Obama administration has shown by its actions and omissions that it is not really different from the administration of George W. Bush.

“Not only has Obama given up his claim to a complete change in US policy, but he is actually continuing the policy of Bush. And since Obama pretends to be the opposite of Bush, this is double treachery.”

Mahmoud Abbas is fed up. The day before yesterday [5 November] he withdrew his candidacy for the coming presidential election in the Palestinian Authority.

I understand him.

Afghanistan: Open Letter to Obama

Here is Laurie’s letter, by Laurie Dobson of Maine, written for the peace movement. Please everyone pass this around discuss, endorse and act- Send endorsements of the letter to Laurie lauriegdobson@ yahoo.com and to Obama and to Congress.  Thanks, Bruce Marshall brmas@yahoo. com
OPEN LETTER FROM THE PEACE MOVEMENT TO PRESIDENT OBAMA ON HIS UPCOMING DECISION REGARDING THE AFGHAN WAR
Dear Mr. President:
According to press reports, you intend to decide between November 7 and November 11 whether or not to send tens of thousands of American soldiers to Afghanistan. We are writing in advance of that decision to add our voice to those of Sen. Feingold, many House Democrats, and of a clear majority of Americans in urging you not to escalate this war, but rather to announce an immediate cease-fire followed by a withdrawal of all US troops in the fastest way consistent with the safety of our forces. We urge you to end the policy of using Predator drones to assassinate Pakistani civilians on the territory of their own country, in defiance of all concepts of international law. We also call upon you to cease all covert CIA and Pentagon operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran.
No vital American interest is at stake in Afghanistan. Former Marine and State Department official Matthew Hoh is right: the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan have come to be viewed as invaders and occupiers, and the resistance they encounter has nothing to do with international terrorism. This war is futile, and now doomed to failure. There is no military solution to the problems that beset Afghanistan. Afghanistan and the rest of this tragically war-torn region need a Marshall Plan of peaceful economic development, through which some of the 15 million unemployed workers in our own country could find productive jobs. We have no confidence in the advice being given to you by military leaders like Gen. McChrystal, who has been implicated in torture in Iraq.
We supported your candidacy because we viewed you as the best chance for ending the wars of the Bush era. We applauded your rejection of the rhetoric of fear and division that was the stock in trade of Bush and Cheney. We are alarmed by the way that rhetoric has crept into your public pronouncements since your August address in Phoenix. Your decision on Afghanistan will represent the decisive turning point of your presidency. If you turn away from war, you will provide a profile in courage that will solidify your support and open up a new perspective for progressive reforms in our country. You will honor the spirit of John F. Kennedy, who was searching for an exit strategy from the Vietnam war. If you opt for a wider war, the resulting heavy casualties will destroy confidence in your leadership among your own most devoted advocates. Hundreds of billions of dollars will be poured down a rat hole, and will no longer be available for any reform and renovation of American society, which will increasingly fall behind the economic strength of other countries. Your domestic agenda will be halted, in the same way your predecessor Lyndon B. Johnson was crippled by the Vietnam war. Escalation of the Afghan war, in short, would be an act of political suicide for you, and of national suicide for our country.
We are keenly aware of the difficulties and animosities you face, and we have long done everything possible to give your administration the benefit of the doubt, even in the face of repeated disappointments. But we now approach the moment of truth: will you be a great progressive president, or will you prove too weak to turn away from the bankrupt policies institutionalized and entrenched under Bush and Cheney. Therefore, we want you to know our attitude before you decide on the proposed Afghan escalation. If you choose to escalate, we will oppose this policy with all the energy we possess. We will act to mobilize the largest possible anti-war demonstration in Washington DC and other cities before the end of 2009, and continuously thereafter. We will support anti-war candidates of any party in the 2010 elections. If you are still waging the Afghan war in 2011, we will be forced to seriously consider backing an explicitly anti-war primary candidate to challenge you during the Democratic primaries.
We therefore respectfully urge you to act in the spirit of your 2008 campaign  the spirit of hope and change, neither of which can survive the continuation or expansion of the hopeless Afghan war.
Signed by the following anti-war organizations and peace activists:
