Political parties, unions, professional chambers and nongovernmental organizations came together in Taksim Square Oct. 4 to demonstrate against a possible war with Syria.

The crowd chanted against Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), calling it a murderer and a collaborator.

A large delegation from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) also attended the demonstration.

After five people were killed in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa’s Akçakale district by a Syrain mortar Oct. 3, the Turkish Prime Ministry issued an official statement saying “[The Turkish military had] hit targets in Syria.” The statement was followed by a parliamentary discussion on armed intervention against Syria, that was eventually approved.

The demonstrators stated prior to the demonstration that the deaths in Akçakale were a result of the war cries which had been made by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) with the encouragement it gets from imperialist powers. The statement added that peoples of Turkey were against war and they would stand up against war policies, at home and abroad.
