Proposition 37, which would require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods will be voted on in California on 6 November 2012. Recently, during just one week, a host of chemical, biotech and junk food corporations donated nearly US$25 million to try to kill this Proposition. The “Big Six” chemical companies: Monsanto, DuPost, BASF, Bayer, Dow and Syngenta have contributed $13.5 million into fighting the Proposition. Pepsi, Coke, Nestle, and Kellogg, which provide information about GE foods to consumers in 49 countries but not the United States, have also contributed several million dollars.
