Witch hunts in “free” Libya

While NATO’s mandate enjoins it to protect civilians, the Alliance allows the forces of the Libyan National Transition Council to continue their abuses. After hunting down black Africans, the summary executions now extend to members of the Qadhadhfa tribe, that of the fallen Leader. Hundreds of thousands of African workers have already fled the country to escape death; the time has now come for certain Libyans to take the road to exile if they want to survive

Critics of NATO’s intervention in Libya have launched some of their harshest indictments against the international media, and particularly Doha based station Al Jazeera, which positioned itself as the greatest champion of the so-called Arab Spring. The resignation of Al Jazeera director general Wadah Kanfar following the release of Wikileaks cables which expose his links to the CIA is sure to give such critics a sense of vindication. With the channel being seen as the “voice” of the movement against Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya, it also raises questions about the potential for Mr Kanfar and the channel’s vested interests in NATO’s intervention which brought that movement to power.

A number of news reports that were broken by the channel to make the case for the intervention have over the past six months been strongly contested by human rights organisations.

One of the most potent of these was the unfounded claim that “African mercenaries” were working for Muammar Gaddafi. Despite organisations like Amnesty International highlighting the lack of evidence for the claim evidence that it has led to the systematic persecution of black Libyans and other black Africans by the rebels have streamed out of the country for the past six months.

Shortly before the fall of Tripoli, the town of Tawergha had been completely eradicated of all its mainly black population by rebels in nearby Misrata, who had marked their signature on the walls to the town: “the brigade for purging slaves, black skin”. Just a few days before the rebels advanced into Tripoli, a friend who worked in a refugee called me to report that 1,000 people from Tawergha had shown up at the site in the early hours of the morning.

That camp is now reported to have also been eradicated and people who give refuge in their home to Tawerghans are also targeted. Yesterday rebels from Zintan raided one such home in Tripoli because it was also providing a roof for eight families from Tawergha.

There were about 40 with mostly AKs with bullets in the chamber ready to fire at unarmed people,” a young man who lives in the home said. “They took all the adult males from Tawergha, and my father and brother and left only two old guys and took whatever they had left of money. They came from all sides of our land pointing their guns in our faces, scaring the women out of their minds, at one point this guy was waving a gun at little children from Tawergha. Our only crime was to offer a roof for these harassed people.”

There has been a rush by black people to leave the country, but last Saturday, one of the organisations responsible for evacuating thousands of migrant workers from other African countries, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has had to stop the process. IOM spokesman Jumbe Omari Jumbe told Reuters: “The NTC says they have to make sure of the migrants, to register them and to identify who is a real migrant and who is not.

Upon his visit to Tripoli last week, David Cameron basked in the praise of NTC leaders, Mustafa Abdel Jalil and Mahmoud Jabril, for Britain’s leading role in their “revolution” and he was keen to stress the success he had witnessed, with hospitals working and people in the streets. Cameron and other leaders of the NATO states have made no mention of the targeting of black people that is part of the wider witch hunts against anyone who is remotely associated with supporting the former government.

Just before the fall of the capital, empty accommodation on construction sites that had come to a halt and hotels provided refuge for thousands that had fled areas that the rebels had already succeeded in securing with vital support from NATO. Since the takeover, they along with thousands of others from Tripoli have found themselves back in the same predicament and have been forced into hiding if they do not have the money or means to flee. With every day that passes, others are found dead or imprisoned and I am frequently reminded of a conversation as I waited in the harbour to leave the city, when a fellow passenger remarked to an armed guard that all of the prisons must be empty now that the rebels had released all their inmates. The guard smiled: “We have filled them all up again.”

People who appear in public criticising the new government are under particular threat, in this report byRussia Today one man says “if I appear in front of the camera, they will send a bullet to my head…do you remember Ehab, the black guy? He was arrested a few days ago after appearing on TV“. When they do appear in news broadcasts their faces and names are always hidden.

The witch hunt extends to non-Libyans who come from countries which were friendly to the former regime. As we boarded the fishing boat that was to evacuate us to Malta, an armed guard initially said that two Telesurjournalists, one Cuban and Ecuadorian, would not be allowed to board because “South America is friends with Gaddafi.” All eastern Europeans also face being barred from fleeing, and in this video Ukrainians and Russians who had been working in the country report being beaten and tortured by the rebels.

People who belong to Libya’s largest tribe, Wafalla, based in Beni Walid are amongst the prime targets. The tribe has refused to surrender their city to the NTC and one young Wafalla man said: “They know which tribe we are from just by looking at our face, I have to move every day to a different place. We can’t even go to the hospital to find people we think are dead or hurt because they will take us. There is no safe place.

A female friend of mine and university lecturer who had gained her doctorate at the London School of Economics (see picture), Salma, committed the crime of coming from the same tribe as Gaddafi, the Qadhafadhfa. She was shot dead as she fled for the airport along with her mother and two nieces, Yam aged 20 months and Aden, who was just three-weeks old.

The weeks since the takeover of Tripoli have been dominated by reports of a “final push” by the rebels into Beni Walid, Sirte and Sabha. But resistance continues to rage forcing the rebels to turn away from Beni Walid and the people of these areas have been given their ultimatum, surrender or face a bloodbath. .

In the aftermath of Iraq and Afghanistan, and with Palestine never far from the thoughts of people on the Arab street, Al Jazeera has played a key role in convincing them that this “revolution” which the NTC have admitted would not have been possible without NATO’s intervention, has been welcomed by ordinary Libyans.

But there was in reality no investigation prior to the start of the bombing campaign into the population’s support for the rebels or a NATO intervention. And six months of NATO bombing to force the surrender of area after area, the NTC still unable to move its headquarters to Tripoli and ongoing witch hunts to root out any potential resistance to the new status quo, indicates it’s a lot lower then the United Nations was led to believe.

    Losing Afghanistan, Losing Central Asia

    Craig Murray –

Obama is now asking Congress for a waiver on Uzbekitsan’s human rights record – arguably the worst in the world – in order to restart military supplies to President Karimov of Uzbekistan. Even Bush stopped these, after the 2005 Andijan massacre of at least 800 civilian demonstrators.

This blog has repeatedly pointed to the ever-increasing role of the “Northern Distribution Network” for getting supplies to the NATO troops in Afghanistan, with Uzbekistan as the point of entry. The Wikileaks cables from Tashkent outline a consistent US policy of sacrificing the human rights of Uzbeks in order to promote this military agenda.

Unfortunately, by promoting evil dictatorship in Central Asia, the United States and NATO are not advancing their own long term interests. Like Mubarak, Karimov is passing his sell-by date. But all rational thinking is thrown out of the window as NATO concentrates on the war it is losing in Afghanistan.

I am advised by the British Embassy that to visit the scenes of the November 1841 uprising in central Kabul as research for my book on Burnes is too dangerous. After ten full years of occupation, with 180,000 troops and billions of dollars in military hardware, they do not even control a few square miles in the centre of the capital, let alone the country. The recent attacks on the US Embassy and British Council have proved that. This war is lost.

America’s increasing fawning to Karimov is yet more evidence of that. The reason America is now so desperate for his favour is that, as they leave defeated, taking Karzai with them, they have to get out millions of tonnes of vehicles and military equipment, which has to pass overland. They have lost this war so absolutely that they no longer have possession of the ground they started with. They cannot get out the way they went in, through Pakistan, as they would be attacked in the Bolan and Khyber passes, and along the entire route. So they have to leave through Uzbekistan. The Americans will do anything for Karimov, just as long as they get permission to slink out through his country. I hope as they go they look into the faces of the people whose continued enslavement buys their permission.

Following commentary by Dennis South sums up the current situation:
There is a verse of Qur’an: “Man plans and God plans. But God is the BEST of planners.”

Over the past 2 weeks, NATO and the rats have suffered 16 major losses:

    1. The Libyan Defense Forces re-captured Brega. That’s the oil port where they ship out oil. It’s what NATO wanted to capture, and hold, more than anything. They have NEVER been able to hold Brega, and it is now in the hands of Gaddafi.

    2. The Libyan Defense Forces re-captured Ras Lanouf, an important oil refinery. My understanding is that, due to this Jamahiriya success, oil exports from Libya have dropped from 200,000 barrels a day to 20,000, if I read correctly.
    3. Their attacks on Bani Walid were rebuffed severely by the Libyan Defence Forces. The “rebels” lost 1,000 soldiers. And the defence was so strong that the rats refused their commanders’ orders to return to the fight. When asked if they were fatigued, they told their commanders, “No. We just do not wish to spill Libyan blood anymore. So, this is a turn of events that might get stronger. We’ll have to wait and see.

    4. Same is the case with their attack on Sirte

    5. Ditto for Sebha

    6. Gaddafi now has at least 10,000 Tuaregs at his disposal (and maybe more), and some of them have crossed into Libya to help him fight. I believe they are now part of his security squad. But the other thing that happened, and that was reported even by the mainstream press, is that Saadi Gaddafi, who the press had attempted to give the impression that he had left the fight by going to Niger, has re-entered the fight. And he has the support of those 10,000 Tuaregs. I do not know if he brought all of them, but my understanding is that thousands of them are now IN LIBYA. The Tuareg council had a meeting of 3 or 4 different representatives of the Tuareg tribes of the Sahara. And they issued a WARNING to Niger: If you interfere with Gaddafi, we will overthrow your government. The Tuareg’s are KNOWN, by military experts, to be the world’s top desert fighters–barring none.

    7. Other Saharan tribes and sub-tribes are rallying behind Gaddafi. These are non-Libyans and fiercely loyal to Gaddafi.

    8. There’s a gradual trickle of Arab fighters, from other countries, coming to Libya to fight alongside Gaddafi. That is a big surprise, quite frankly (though it shouldn’t be). If this trend continues, it could be quite interesting, and quite positive for the Jamahiriya.

    9. Although most all of Tripoli is in the hands of the “rebels,” LDF sniper-marksmen are popping off “rebels” left and right, using silencers. Also, Tripoli hospitals are FILLING UP with European mercenaries who are being shot by fighters of the resistance. It’s guerilla warfare.

    10. There is mass chaos in Benghazi, the HQ of the “rebels.” Residents are flying the green flag, in defiance of the “rebels.” Al-Qaeda, which from the outset has been a major NATO-supported component of the rats wants Mustafa Abdul Jalil, head of the “rebels,” dead, and they actually announced that. The “rebels” themselves are fighting against each other, even on the battlefield.

    11. The Egyptian army has not been able to stop Arab tribes from cross the Egyptian border and going into Libya to help Gaddafi.

    12. The “rebels” have no chain of command, and this week they fought each other about that.

    13. Some of the rebels are simply leaving the battlefield, after having attained the loot that they want–a phenomenon that Dr. Webster Tarpley predicted would happen.

    14. DEBKAfile, a top Israeli military/intelligence news organ, wrote a very, very strong and interesting article in which they said, in effect, that now that Gaddafi is out in the desert, he has MORE power than when he was in Tripoli. There is now time to regroup and to plan.

    15. Khamis al-Gaddafi is fighting SO well and so brilliantly, that Russian military experts that are watching the war closely stated, yesterday I think it was, that Khamis has EARNED, on the battlefield, the rank of GENERAL. That is huge. Not because of the rank title, but because this means that NATO, in Khamis alone, is in DEEP SHIT.

    16. Mustafa Abdul Jalil, the head rat, was forced to admit, right in front of his French masters, that Gaddafi and the Jamahiriya HAS ALL OF LIBYA’S GOLD. That’s right. Libya’s gold is in the hands of the Jamahiriya, and it’s a LOT of gold that will allow the Jamahiriya to fight for a long time to buy anything it needs. Libya is amongst the top 25 countries in terms of gold reserves, as I understand it.

My hope is that NATO has opened up a huge can of worms that will sweep across all of North Africa. The Saharan tribes have a deep reverence and respect for Gaddafi. They are not controlled by any of the governments in the region and have always lived their own life of independence and taken nothing from the various governments in parts of: Algeria, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Libya.

DEBKAfile pointed out that Gaddafi now has free reign to roam over 5 or 7 African countries, in the desert, and that it is “impossible” [that’s the word that was used by DEBKAfile] for NATO to cover that distance, which is about 682,000 square miles, if my memory serves me correctly–maybe more.

The whole world is waking up to what the Libyan slogan means: “All power, all wealth and all arms in the hands of the people.”

The Tuaregs made an announcement that was also a WARNING to the rebels. They said something like, “Only those people can cross our deserts WHO WE LIKE.” And they don’t like the rebels. The rebels slaughtered a group of Tuaregs in Libya and are carrying out ethnic cleansing (genocide) against Blacks in the limited areas they now control in Libya.

About Algeria: Algeria is helping Gaddafi. I refuse to believe that they’re not. It’s clear to me that they are. They have to, because Algeria shares a long border with Libya, and the AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Maghrib) is causing problems. Algeria is handling them very well. But they are 4,000 strong, and Western and Russian intelligence says that they have more weapons than anybody in the area.

Algeria will not be able to play the games that other Arab countries play. That’s my belief. Also, it is known that some Algerians have stormed some city and fought and removed some Al-Qaeda people.

Another factor is TIME. My hope–and it’s only a hope–is that even the Arabs are going to learn just who Gaddafi is. Time is allowing millions of people [quite literally] to learn more about Gaddafi. Those who, before, hated him, are now LOVING him. Everybody likes the underdog that FIGHTS BACK.

Believe it or not, even some of the STUPID right-wingers in the U.S. are falling in love with Gaddafi!! Seven months ago, you’d read comments at Yahoo News, at the end of articles, that went like this:

    “Gaddafi’s a prick!”
“I hope they find that sand nigger soon, and kill ‘em!”
“We need to nuke Gaddafi and ALL them A-rabs!!”

My wife has been watching the PROGRESSION in comments, over the months (since I refuse to watch any main stream media, she does that for me). And those comments have changed. Now you read,

“I don’t like A-rabs!! But I LIKE Gaddafi!!! Because he FIGHTS BACK!”
“Oh, so we’re supposed to be HAPPY because a bully is fighting Libya!”
“Wow, if that man is a dictator, then give us one like that over here!”

    And comments like that.

The young people around the world are making videos such as this one go viral:

I must mention that a WHOLE LOT of credit has to go to Dr. Webster Tarpley, believe it or not, for teaching the Middle East and Muslim public about the situation; about the U.S. goals, etc. Tarpley is often interviewed on stations including Press TV, an Iranian TV news station which is otherwise anti-Libyan.

NATO poised to use tactical nuclear weapons when all else fails
Guerrilla War Against NATO-rebel Rule Begins in Libya

NATO poised to use tactical nuclear weapons when all else fails, as it will, in the attempted occupation of Libya and failed installation of a puppet government

    HeyU Quality Ads
In the wake of NATO bombing in support of CIA-backed “rebels” and the attempts, now in their 7th month, to push Libyan hero Muammar Qaddafi out of Libya and over throw the democratic Jamahiriya government, Libyan resistance forces aligned against the newly-installed lackey regime are beginning to wage guerrilla warfare, as promised, leaving much speculation about the future of the resource-rich north African country which NATO continues to destroy in the hope the puppet regime can come to power.

Nevertheless, the puppet “National Transitional Council” still controls only parts of Libya’s biggest cities, but is far from controlling the vast majority of Libyan territory, nor is firmly in control of oil, and is immensely unpopular with the population which had benefited immensely under the leadership of Muammar Qaddafi.

NATO, a conglomeration of the most powerful Western imperialist military forces, has aligned with a variety of Libyan forces which make up the country’s “rebel” movement, including Al-Qaida and Al-Qaida type groups. The goal of NATO intervention is to replace the popular direct democracy Jamahiriya headed inspired into being by Qaddafi in 1977 with one more palpable to the interests of American and European imperialism.

Anti-imperialists have noted that the fall of the Jamahiriya regime would be a blow to the people of Libya, Africa and the Third World, to put it mildly. It is the only country on earth where the slogan “all power, all wealth and all arms int he hands of the people” has been taken as a revolutionary motto to be implemented. While the consolidation of imperialist rule in Libya is to the direct disservice of people’s struggles everywhere, this outcome has yet to be resolved. The Jamahiriya government remains in force across the majority of Libya, even though communications in those areas are cut off by NATO and world media is not there to report. The Libyans learned the lesson in Tripoli that journalists were often intelligence agents, directing NATO air strikes against targets. They have decided to fight their resistance without main stream media embedded with them. Resistance to US intervention and their collaborators in Libya continues and has begun to take on a new character – that of guerrilla warfare.

The military forces in direct alliance with the Libyan Jamahiriya and the Libyan Defense Forces, continue to repel attacks by “rebel” forces in several key cities and have recaptured other strategic points such as the port of Brega which they have controlled for almost all of the duration of the war. Many of Libya’s sub-Saharan national minority groups are rallying behind Qaddafi against the “rebel”/NATO government. The “rebels” have not yet gained control over the southern portion of the country where most of the oil is.

Africans from neighboring countries are rallying behind the Libyan government and fighters from north Africa and the Middle East are entering Libya to fight Western control over the region. Snipers are taking out “rebel” troops throughout Libya on a daily basis.

In addition to the gains being made by the Libyan resistance the imposed lackey government, the “National Transitional Council,” is showing no signs of being able to consolidate their rule in the few areas they have managed to occupy under massive aerial fire-power support of NATO and western special forces ground troops, 17 of which are currently being held captive in Bani Walid.

In cities nominally controlled by the “rebels”, i.e. Benghazi and Tripoli in the main, neighborhoods are filled with residents who still display the green flag of the legitimate Jamahiriya government to which the entire population, men and women, belong and pass their own legislation via People’s Conferences and elect administrative People’s Committees to implement their decisions.

Peaceful demonstrations continue against the “rebel” puppet government. Pogroms against Sub-Saharan Africans, labeled by “rebel” commanders as mercenaries, have caused many to flee to refugee camps. The “rebels” themselves have no central chain of command and in many cases are fighting each-other. The economy of the cities under “rebel” control have come to a standstill and the NTC is reliant on direct aid from imperialist sponsors. Elsewhere, soldiers fighting under “rebel” command are refusing orders.

Because the NTC is not capable of subduing the resistance or consolidating a central rule, it is speculated that NATO will be forced to send in a larger military force to attempt to “secure” the country. Mathaba analysts predict the use of tactical nuclear weapons if NATO is not brought to heal by the governments and peoples of its host nations in particular the USA, Britain (UK) and France. Even if this happens, resistance to Western aggression and control over Libya will continue until the bitter end.

What begins as a step back can end as a step forward. Just as Western imperialism seeks to conquer Libya and north Africa to maintain its larger parasitic rule over the world, sustained people’s resistance and protracted guerrilla warfare against the NATO occupiers and their traitorous collaborators will be one part of imperialism’s larger downfall in the region and around the world. As Ho Chi Minh, the hero of the Vietnamese liberation struggle, stated, “What could be more natural. After sorrow comes joy.”

The Ugly Truth: Video of Libyan Rebel Beheading Gadhaffi Soldier and other NATO War Crimes
    by Susan Lindauer

NATO has been pumping propaganda out of Libya to justify its “humanitarian war” against the government of Moammar Gadhaffi. Until now, NATO has succeeded in large part because ordinary citizens around the world have no access to direct intelligence on which to base their own opinions. It’s more horrific than you have imagined: beheadings, rapes and sodomy of women (and men), even force feeding the bodies of dead soldiers to Prisoners of War. You won’t believe this until you see it for yourself. NATO must stop this War immediately, or face the world’s condemnation— and pay the consequence of massive financial damages to Libyan victims.

By Susan Lindauer, former CIA Asset covering Libya at the United Nations

NATO has been pumping propaganda out of Libya to justify its “humanitarian war” against the government of Moammar Gadhaffi. Until now, NATO has succeeded in large part because ordinary citizens around the world have no access to direct intelligence on which to base their own opinions. As the former CIA Asset who covered Libya at the United Nations from 1995 to 2003 during negotiations for the Lockerbie Trial, I am compelled to break past that propaganda to examine actual evidence.

Responding to numerous requests, I am sharing primary evidence that I receive daily from sources inside Tripoli. Video documentation comes from Libyan refugees, collected by a fact finding commission called “Global Civilians for Peace in Libya.” The fact-finding team includes Europeans, Africans, Americans and international human rights attorneys, who are preparing allegations of War Crimes against NATO. Judging from these videos, financial damages that NATO will be required to pay Libya should be stupendous, indeed.

Above all, it’s clear NATO has grossly misrepresented its arguments at the United Nations, in order to justify military action against Gadhaffi. Britain and France trusted bad intelligence from unreliable sources, trying to gain power from the conflict. A more careful investigation shows that it is the NATO Rebels who are guilty of serious war crimes—not Gadhaffi’s soldiers at all. Sanctions should be thrown out, and NATO should shift its military forces to back Gadhaffi in defending the Libyan people.

Never play truth or dare with a spy……………………..

„All should be aware that the government of Libya is the Jamahiriya government, that the power belongs to the men and women of the Popular Conferences and the People’s Committees in Libya. This Government by the People will never fail nor fall. It embodies the millions of Libyans and for that reason it can’t fall. Anyone who says Qaddafi’s government has fallen is nothing but ridiculous and a joke. Qaddafi doesn’t have a government, therefore that government can’t fall.

Qaddafi is out of power since 1977 when I have passed the power to the People’s Committees of the Jamahiriya. When 2,000 tribes meet and declare that only the Libyan people represent Libya, doesn’t that say enough?

This is the answer to NATO which has said the National Transitional Council from Benghazi represents the Libyan people. The Libyan people are here and they are with me, nobody can represent us. So no legitimacy to anything else or anyone else, the power belongs to the people. All Libyans are members of the People’s Committees. Anything else is false.

What is happening now in Libya is a charade which can only take place because of the NATO air raids, which will not last forever. When they have left the traitors will be gone too. We are ready to die for the Power of the People. This is what we stand for and this is what our martyrs have been standing for.“
