“Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb” has claimed responsibility for the recent twin suicide terrorist attack in Algeria.
In a statement the militants have claimed that the target of the attack – the military academy – is “an important symbol of the Algerian regime,” which the authors of the text accused of supporting the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The attack on the military academy in Cherchell occurred in the evening on August 26. Two suicide bombers with a slight difference in time blew themselves up near the building of the academy. The attack killed 18 people.
The confrontation between Islamists and the Algerian government has been raging since 1992, when the victory of the radical Islamist Party in the general elections was annulled.
