A mother and her two children have been killed by a NATO airstrike in the Libyan coastal town of Zliten, a Libyan official says.

The raid took place in Zliten, 150 kilometers (95 miles) east of Tripoli, on Thursday morning.

The Libyan government, which took reporters on a tour of the city, said they were killed in a NATO airstrike on a villa in a residential neighborhood.

The children’s father, Mustafa Naji, said that two other family members were seriously injured in the raid.

“Is this what you call protecting civilians?” AFP quoted a local official as saying. “This is what NATO is there for — to kill our children.”

The unnamed official was referring to UN resolution 1973 that mandated the enforcement of a no-fly zone over Libya to “protect civilians.”

NATO launched a major air campaign against the forces of the Libyan regime in mid-March.

Besides NATO attacks, a fierce fighting between revolutionary forces and troops of Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi has left thousands of people dead and many others wounded
