The counter revolution, Shafiq and State Security

In an interview with Ahram Online, Brigadier General Safwat El Zayat, a member of the Committee of Trustees of the January 25 Revolution, revealed the existence of a triad, composed of former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, former interior minister Mahmoud Wagdy and a number of former regime leaders, with former president Hosni Mubarak at their head, set up for the purpose of subverting what he described as the greatest revolution in history. The elimination, yesterday, of the state security apparatus effectively brought an end to this scenario, he said.

Palestinian youth call for Hamas and Fatah to reconcile

Popular  calls  for  ending  the “division” between the  Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and  the  Fatah-administered West Bank gained a certain momentum recently with “Facebook youths” and  other activists in both territories saying they are planning  demonstrations to  pressure  Hamas and Fatah to put an end to the division.

The upheavals across the Middle East have come to Colonel Qaddafi ‘s Libya and unlike his fellow rulers to his east, he is struggling to hold on to his iron rule. Much of the population opposes the colonel and many parts of the military and state have gone over to the opposition. The colonel retains control over security forces and army units commanded by his sons, but in the public he only has the support of the few people who benefited from his petro-largesse and a few tribes whose members have been well placed in the security forces and army.
