    the piece was actually written during ROC war against Japan in WWII. when the committee voted for it to be made PRC anthem, there was concern among them that the lyric wrttien as WWII war song point to the nation at risk and attack, is too negative, a revised lyric was pen but later abandoned again.

    if you compare it to the US anthem, you will see similarity that both song actually descript danger to their state and their birth from war (US revolution war/WWII).
