Michael Hudson on Chinese Soft Power

Posted by seumasach on May 30, 2009

Chinese soft power, as Michael Hudson indicates here, may be increasingly influencing US foreign policy in a trade off in which continued support for US treasuries is premised on the dismantling of the US empire. This is a scenario which we have been anticipating for some time:

China Is Now in Firm Control of U.S. Debt Markets

26th May, 2009

It is hilarious listening to the propagandists try to “spin” the events in bond and currency markets to make it sound like the U.S. government is still operating from a position of strength.

While there are many Western, corporate-media outlets spouting such drivel, I’ll use the Financial Times as my example.“China stuck in dollar trap”, crows FT on May 24th. Then, later “…[Beijing] has little choice but to keep pouring the bulk of its growing reserves into the U.S. Treasury”.

Video and transcript by WillKnott.ie – Thank you.May 28, 2009 “ICH” — Michael O’Brien, former councillor and Mayor of Clonmel attended the RTÉ programme Questions and Answers on 25 May 2009 and, after Minister Noel Dempsey, the sponsoring minister of the Ryan Commission report in to Child Abuse allegations spoke, Mr O’Brien spoke to the minister and to the panel.

Bond markets defy Fed as Treasury yields spike

Posted by smeddum on May 29, 2009

The US Federal Reserve may soon be forced to launch fresh blitz of quantitative easing whatever the consequences for the US dollar, or risk seeing economic recovery snuffed out by the latest surge in long-term borrowing costs.

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard
29 May 2009
Telegraph

Market expects Fed will have to double purchases of Treasuries.
Yields on 10-year Treasury bonds have risen relentlessly since March when the Fed first announced its plan to buy $300bn (£188bn) of US government debt directly, a move that briefly forced rates down to nearly 2.5pc, a level thought to be the Fed’s implicit target.
Yields have jumped to 3.69pc – after spiking as high as 3.74pc on Wednesday – pushing up the standard 30-year mortgage loan to 5.08pc and lifting the borrowing cost for corporations. Read the rest of this entry »

During his first official visit to Turkey since being inaugurated as the President of the Republic of Slovenia in November 2007, Dr. Danilo Turk gave a lecture on May 21st at the University of Bosphorus in Istanbul entitled “Multilateralism in an Era of Uncertainty: The Role of the Institutions in the System of the United Nations.”

Having read his speech, one of the things that stuck out to me was his observation that big economic powers like China, India and others compete and that they are relatively peaceful in the way that they compete.  He suggests that happiness is the appropriate response to competition being of a peaceful nature in today’s world.  He continues by asking the question how does the world organize for that competition?  From his perspective, he sees this remaining as an open question and he observes that at a recent meeting of the group of G20 in London he saw a pattern of competitiveness mixed with cooperativeness.
