LONDON, March 9 (RIA Novosti) – Britain and Russia are allies in the fight against terrorism, violence and extremism, a U.K. government security advisor said Monday.

Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Security and Counter-terrorism Lord Alan West told RIA Novosti that the U.K. and Russia had similar positions on the security sphere.

However, he refused to comment on resumption of bilateral counterterrorism cooperation, saying he was not entitled to make comments on the issue.

Lord West is chairing the first session of Britain’s National Security Forum on Monday.

Russia-U.K. ties have plunged to a post-Cold War low since the murder in London of Russian security service defector Alexander Litvinenko in 2006 and Russia’s refusal to extradite London’s chief suspect, Andrei Lugovoi. In July 2007, London suspended anti-terrorism cooperation with Russia.
