Hamas says it has targeted the Hatzor Air Base, near the Israeli town of Ashdod, as Israel rebuffs calls for cease-fire in Gaza.

The al-Aqsa TV channel reported that Grad rockets launched by Hamas hit the air base on Monday, the fist time since Israel launched its attacks on the Gaza Strip.

The attack came amid ongoing fierce battle between Israeli ground troops who started an incursion into the costal strip on Saturday and Palestinian fighters.

The battles have so far wounded 55 Israeli troops, five of them in critical condition.

Hamas had earlier announced that it had targeted Hatzerim, a main air base located on the western outskirts of Beersheba in the Negev desert.

Palestinian groups have been launching rockets at Israeli targets since the start of Operation Cast Lead signaling that Israel has failed to achieve its goal of stopping such attacks.
