Clergyman Who Blew the Whistle on Murder of Canadian Native Children now in Scotland.
Details of tour:
Gilvenbank Hotel, (Function Suite) Huntsman Road, Balfarg, GLENROTHES Thurs 11th Sept 2008.
Rev. Kevin Annett, who single-handedly forced the government and churches of Canada to acknowledge that massive numbers of children died in their Indian boarding schools, is coming to Scotland from September 8 to 12 as part of a speaking tour to condemn what he calls “Canada’s upcoming version of the Warren Commission report”.
Annett, the author of two books and producer of an award-winning documentary film on Genocide in Canada, has waged a heroic David and Goliath battle for nearly fifteen years, and at great personal cost, to bring to light hidden crimes in his country’s Indian residential school system.
This past year, his efforts have been vindicated as Canada was forced to issue an official apology for the residential schools and launch a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” (TRC) into the estimated 50,000 children who died in these schools. But this Commission is designed to conceal more than it reveals, according to Annett.
“No names will allow to be named, no wrongdoing in a residential school can be discussed in these TRC hearings. That’s nothing less than an official whitewash” says Annett.
“Once again, the parties responsible for a crime will be investigating themselves, while the truth remains buried in hundreds of mass graves across the continent.”
Annett is pushing for an international Tribunal, with the powers to arrest and prosecute, to unearth the real history of official Genocide in Canada. In the face of continual harassment and censure, Annett is touring Europe to build support for this Tribunal, and to ask people to boycott Canadian tourism and the 2010 Olympics in British Columbia.
While in Scotland, Kevin Annett will also be screening his award-winning documentary film UNREPENTANT, which documents the Canadian genocide and his long struggle to bring the guilty to justice.
Annett, whose mother’s family emigrated to Canada from the Loch Lomond area in the 18th century, sees strong parallels between crimes against natives in Canada and his own Scottish ancestors.
“The same Empire that drove my family off their land and onto coffin ships to Canada has done the same thing to native people over there. So we all have a moral responsibility to know our own history and stop it from happening again.”
