The shift in US policy is now clear. Realism has dictated that Assad will not be overthrown in Syria and that the euro will not collapse. By relaunching the “war on terror” against Al Qaeda Washington signals a diplomatic settlement in Syria and , at the same time, seeks to reforge its alliance with Europe and strengthen NATO.Hollande’s Mali campaign and Cameron’s travails over Europe both flow directly from Washington’s new stance.

Abdel Basset al-Megrahi died on 20 May 2012 of cancer at the age of 60. He was the only person convicted of the bombing of PanAm flight 103, which exploded over Lockerbie on 21 December 1988, killing 270 people.

Details emerging about Mohamed Merah, the alleged gunman in a series of murders in the Toulouse area from March 11 to March 19, raise serious questions about the conduct of French intelligence and police agencies.

Merah allegedly killed one paratrooper in Toulouse on March 11, two paratroopers in nearby Montauban on March 15, and a father and several children at a Jewish school in Toulouse on March 19. He was killed in an armed standoff with police at his Toulouse apartment Thursday, shot in the head by a sniper as he fell from his balcony.
