I was right then a couple of weeks ago to predict the NATO “victory” in Libya but failed to predict the “death” of Gaddafi. That distinction falls to Allain Jules.

It is difficult to see what outcome awaits us in the Libyan situation. NATO have dug themselves into a very deep hole but so far managed to conceal that fact from almost everyone. Yet the truth will out we are told. Not if NATO have anything to do with it! Their virtual victory in this war is guaranteed but winning the peace in which a resurgent Libyan people under the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi retake control of their own country will be another matter. If only they had been able to eliminate Gaddafi then perhaps any outcome could be presented as a “democratic” revolution facilitated by themselves but all the indications are that the Guide is safe and sound, at home amongst his own people and that seems unlikely to change.
What do you get when a wannabe imperialist invents a war to get out of trouble at home, straying into deep waters that he neither controls nor understands, getting embroiled in an internecine tribal conflict that spins out of control? The answer to this question is the place where the UK’s David Cameron finds himself now: a 2-bn. pound nightmare.
NATO have been bombing Libya relentlessly for six months and have now announced a 90 day extension to their bombing campaign. On whose authority you may ask? NATO don’t ask for authority, they bomb their way to it. Anyway, having declared victory, they have pledged to continue the war. If you are happy with the logic of that, you won’t be interested in joining our anti-NATO protest. If NATO step up the bombiing when they have won, what will they do when they’re losing. The truth, of course, is that they haven’t won and must continue the campaign until all resistance to the puppet government, which they haven’t yet been able to install, is crushed. That is probably impossible since the Libyan people and the Libyan army are maintaining fierce resistance under the leadership of the dictator they are supposed to hate so much. At this moment, there is no functioning government in Libya and there isn’t likely to be until NATO and its “rebel’ allies enter into negotiations with Gaddafi or are definitively chased out of Libya.
Even though the UN mandate to NATO to “protect Libyan civilians” has run out, or is about to run out, the bombing goes on. NATO’s job is to bomb and as long as it exists there will be bombing. There can be no peace in the world as long as this nefarious organisation exists. Today, Thurday 22nd September, we continue our anti-NATO protests in Glasgow at 5-6 pm, Donald Dewar Statue, top of Buchanan Street. join us!
This week Telesur welcomed home a news team just back from covering NATO’s war on Libya from that nation’s capital, Tripoli. On arrival at Venezuela’s Maiquetia International Airport, the journalists denounced the ongoing ‘fabrication of lies’ by mainstream media outlets and accused the international press of ‘producing the arguments needed for a continuation of the war’. The Libyan people ‘have been invaded by destruction, war, suffering and death, when the solution to the conflict could have been secured by peaceful means’, affirmed Telesur journalist Rolando Segura, who spent the last four months in Libya alongside cameraman Henry Pillajo.
After what recently happened in Libya, one is apt to wonder what democracy really stands for. If democracy is the keyword used to justify the destruction of human lives and property, then God help us all!
