OPEC in price war with US oil producers

Posted by seumasach on November 30, 2014

“In essence, the OPEC (Saudi) has decided to let the price fall to a point that the newest high-cost drilling projects in the US will find it uneconomical to continue production and will be forced to shut down. “

We are seeing classic end of empire scenario in which the imperial centre struggles to control the periphery. It’s a struggle that is being lost as Saudi Arabia, a critical US ally and fulcrum of the petrodollar system breaks, loose and follows an independent policy. These are dramatic developments which can only heighten the present sense of drift and lack of political leadership in the USA and throughout the West. On the other hand there is no sign of the demonization of the Saudis which one might expect in these circumstances. Is that because they hold the whip hand or is the oil crisis the trigger for the next phase of the financial crisis whose imminence David Cameron has recently announced, a financial crisis that could be utterly transformative in terms of the relationship between the West with the rest?

Indian Punchline

The meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries [OPEC] in Vienna on Thursday has been a watershed event in the ebb and flow of energy politics. It took a momentous decision at the bidding of Saudi Arabia that there shall be no cut in oil production to counter the steep drop in oil prices. There were dissenting voices but Saudis call the shots within the OPEC.

WASHINGTON – Buoyed by the failure of the US and five other powers to reach a comprehensive agreement with Iran over its nuclear program after a week of intensive talks, pro-Israel and Republican hawks are calling for Washington to ramp up economic pressure on Tehran even while talks continue, and to give Congress a veto on any final accord.

Hungary’s Viktor Orban: Washington’s new enemy image

The refusal of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his ruling Fidesz party to join the new US and EU Cold War against Russia, notably by agreeing to build the South Stream gas pipeline, in addition to the stinging policies adopted against the foreign owned banks and energy companies, has set off alarm bells in Western capitals. According to William Engdahl, the question which now has to be asked is: will Hungary be the next country to be the target of a US/EU sponsored regime change?

Russia tops Obama’s hit list, not China

Posted by seumasach on November 25, 2014

Obama’s anti-Russian turn is devoid of strategic sense. He can’t court China at the expense of Russia as Nixon did: China and Russia are now inseparable allies and increasingly so in the face of Western hostility. However, anti-Russian rhetoric does serve as a cover for Washington’s close engagement with China which includes permitting China to exchange its dollar holdings for real assets, especially artificially underpriced gold, but also real estate, industrial and port facilities inside the USA.

The India-Russia annual summitry had lately become a tepid affair — something like the anniversary of a boring marriage. How often can an aged couple arouse passion? But the upcoming event bringing President Vladimir Putin to Delhi next month promises to be exciting. Geopolitics may act like an aphrodisiac.

Rupture du G-20 à Brisbane

Posted by seumasach on November 25, 2014

Alfredo Jalife-Rahme

Voltairenet

21st November, 2014
