Why has Pro-Russian Ultra-Nationalist Nikolic changed his tune? Of course he could be a political opportunist, but it is highly unlikely that he made this move without first clearing it with Russia; or maybe it was the other way around.
The Irish Times
DANIEL McLAUGHLIN
SERBIA: FORMER SERB ultra-nationalist leader Tomislav Nikolic, one of the fiercest critics of western support for Kosovo’s independence, has stunned compatriots and erstwhile enemies alike in Brussels by forming a new, EU-friendly party. Read the rest of this entry »

UP AND DOWN WALL STREET DAILY
Taiwan Dumps Fannie, Freddie.
And Uncle Sam?
By RANDALL W. FORSYTH
Despite bailout, GSE debt is eschewed by major foreign investor, and ally.
WHO LOST TAIWAN?
After Mao drove the Nationalists off the Mainland in 1949, the cry went up among U.S. conservatives, “Who lost China?”

There is something symbolic in the fact that Putin’s rise to national fame in Russia was associated with the resolute stance he took against the Chechen secessionist bid in 1999 when, after Yeltsin named him prime minister, he ordered a ground offensive into the republic. His national security background reminiscent of glorious predecessors, the possible support from security forces themselves, plus his resolve to win the war against the secessionists at whatever cost and on top of the ruins of Grozny paved the way for a soaring popularity that brought him to the presidency within less than a year. Bailing Out Georgia
No, not our Georgia – the other one!
By Justin Raimondo Antiwar.com
The US government is sending $1 billion to “rebuild” Georgia – no, not the Georgia located in the southern United States, where home foreclosure rates are double the national average, but the one located in the Caucasus, along Russia’s southern frontier, where the President of the country launched a reckless invasion of a rebellious province, murdered thousands, and got his ass kicked by the rebels and their Russian protectors. Now we’re sending him a billion dollars – by way of a reward. Read the rest of this entry »

Anyone for real politik?

BY Rodric Braithwaite GeorgianDaily
The discussion between David Miliband and a number of experts in last month’s Prospect centred on concepts that have formed the core of the British and western view of international affairs for the last two decades: liberal interventionism, universal values, multilateralism, globalisation, and ethical foreign policy.
But these ideas have lost plausibility as “the west,” their main champion, continues to suffer a loss of authority, not least as a result of the financial crisis. Read the rest of this entry »
