Russia: wait for final UN report

Posted by seumasach on September 18, 2013

“Several Western countries, including the US, viewed the UN report as not leaving any doubts that the Syrian government was responsible for the August 21 use of sarin gas. Russia says those countries are jumping to conclusions and should wait for a final UN report, which is expected to be based on evidence gathered at other sites of alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

UN inspectors were conducting their investigation of those earlier incidents, but their mission was put on pause, as the inspectors were called to probe the latest attack and present an intermediate report on it alone. Moscow says that if all evidence is taken into account, the August 21 chemical attack appears to be a rebel provocation.”

Obama softens on nuclear Iran

Posted by seumasach on September 18, 2013

I have no means to confirm these Debka claims, but I must agree that this kind of diplomacy is consistent with that followed by Obama with Russia over Syria. In any case, I expect Obama to move quickly to resolve the Iran stand-off and move onto the Palestinian issue.

Keep components, just promise not to weaponise them

The moderate mien of Iran’s new president Hassan Rouhani has had its intended effect – even before nuclear dialogue began. President Barack Obama had only one demand of Tehran:  “Iran would have to demonstrate its own seriousness by agreement not to weaponise nuclear power,” he said Wednesday, Sept. 18. He thus took at his word Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who declared the day before: “We are against nuclear weapons. And when we say no one should have nuclear weapons, we definitely do not pursue it ourselves either.”
