Considering the huge lift that the White House gave last week to the visit by the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko — ‘rare honor’ of addressing a joint session of the US Congress, et al — one would have thought the Barack Obama administration was getting into a heightened mood of belligerence vis-a-vis Russia. But a close reading of President Obama’s remarks after the bilateral meeting with Poroshenko last Thursday in Washington creates doubts in the mind.

First Germany, Now France Folds On Syrian Airstrikes
22nd September, 2014
In yet another rather embarrassing event for The White House, just days after President Obama praised the French for helping in the fight against ISIS, and General martin Dempsey noted “the French were our very first ally and they’re with us again now,” French officials have, according to Reuters, ruled out participation in airstrikes against Islamic State in Syria. Poroshenko puts on brave face after U.S. refusal over status
19th September, 2014
Moskovsky Komsomolets writes that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko was not able to reach an agreement with his American counterpart Barack Obama on the supply of heavy weaponry to Ukraine and on granting Ukraine special status as a non-NATO American ally. The Ukrainian President commented on the refusal in the following manner: “Obama has said ‘no,’ since we already have a special status. The level of cooperation between the U.S. and Ukraine on matters of security and defense is much higher than the one required by the status of a principal non-NATO ally.” However, Moskovsky Komsomolets believes that Poroshenko’s optimistic tone is just an attempt to “sweeten the pill.” Meanwhile, the newspaper reports that Poroshenko, in his own words, was satisfied with his visit to the U.S., “despite the fact that not all his plans were realized.”

“Modi visualizes the development of India-China relationship as far beyond a bilateral partnership. He wishes it to develop as a major factor in regional and world politics and the emerging world order, augmenting the capacity of the two Asian powers to influence the international system in a profound fashion”.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction with the Chinese media on Tuesday in New Delhi was a customary practice that was to be expected on the eve of the visit of President Xi Jinping. But such occasions often serve a purpose in setting the right mood for the upcoming event for the visiting dignitary.
