The geopolitics of Central Asia has begun shifting in anticipation of the NATO forces ending their combat role as well as their pullout from Afghanistan and the proposed establishment of the nine American military bases in that country. Kyrgyzstan today gave the final touch to its strategic decision to demand that the US should vacate the Manas military base near the capital Bishkek by July 11, 2014.

BEIJING – Openings over the environment, closer collaboration on North Korea, and no mention of the prickly issue of human rights: at the weekend summit between US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the US seemed to pick up where ties got derailed – that is, in Copenhagen in December 2009, when Obama and then prime minister Wen Jiabao failed to reach an agreement on the environment. Xi reciprocated by demanding respect for the new status of his country and reopening the sensitive and important military dialogue.

Secretary John Kerry has demonstrated courage and wisdom in abandoning his predecessor’s insistence on President Bashar al-Assad’s departure as a precondition to talks for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, thereby bringing the American position closer to that of Russia and many others, including India. He has to go a step further and drop objection to Iran’s participation in the Geneva II conference. Iran has more than convincingly established its potential to prolong the conflict; it should be given an opportunity to play a constructive role.
