One cannot stress too much the importance of this agreement, the inevitable consequence of the convergence of European and Russian interests. The ultimate pillar of Anglo-American power is the control of Eastern Europe as a barrier to precisely this kind of agreement, the Mackinder doctrine. As Europe allies itself to Russia, the Atlanticist factions will wither and Europe’s tutelage to Washington will come to an end. Britain will then be faced with the choice of joining Europe in a spirit of co-operation or holding out as a fourth-world, neo-feudal, failed state.
After 18 months of opposition, the 27 European Union member states finally agreed to launch strategic partnership talks with Russia, a move that green lights negotiations for a new cooperation accord between the nations.

Both the Egyptian and Jordanian regimes have concluded that the Palestine-Israel talks are dead, at least for the duration of the Bush administration, Arab reports suggest. This led to an undiplomatic and possibly historic Mubarak-Bush dust-up at a Sharm-el-Sheikh conference, and a suggestion by an experienced Jordanian commentator that his country would do well to seek out a better relationship with Iran.
