Speech at the Grave of O’Donovan Rossa

The recent barbarism in Gaza has caused me to recall the words of Patrick Pearse for O’Donovan Rossa, the words run in parallel from Ireland’s darkest hours to those of Palestine

It has been thought right, before we turn away from this place in which we have laid the mortal remains of O’Donovan Rossa that one among us should, in the name of all, speak the praise of that valiant man, and endeavour to formulate the thought and the hope that are in us as we stand around his grave. And if there is anything that makes it fitting that I rather than another, I rather than one of the greyhaired men who were young with him and shared in his labour and in his suffering, should speak here, it is perhaps that I may be taken as speaking on behalf of a new generation that has been re-baptised in the Fenian faith and that has accepted the responsibility of carrying out the Fenian programme. The world has betrayed Gaza’s children

Gulf News

It is unbelievable that after 11 days of slaughtering the children of Gaza, the world has yet to decide if it is going to call on Israel to stop its savage offensive.

The Middle East’s Rogue Regime

Posted by seumasach on January 6, 2009

“There are several other casualties of the Gaza War. The most important of these is peace. The whole so-called ‘peace process’ of recent years has now been thrown into reverse. Such is the popular anger aroused by Israel’s actions that there is no hope that meaningful peace talks will be revived in the foreseeable future.”

This is surely the crux of the issue.  Obama sought to bring about a change of tack in US foreign policy, taking its focus away from the Middle-East towards confrontation with Russia and China. Israel have just made that prospect a very remote one indeed.  Thus , the neo-cons have their revenge for the way in which they have been sidelined and the US elite is now in utter disarray.

Patrick Seale

Middle-East Online

5th January, 2009

Until the Middle East manages to contain Israel’s rogue regime by a regional balance of power, peace will remain out of reach, says Patrick Seale.

A striking feature of the War in Gaza is the extraordinary immunity Israel has enjoyed to strike and kill at will. Defence Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, leading members of the Israeli government, have not hesitated to resort to mass murder. Yet, no one has been able to stop them. To all appearances, Israel is a rogue regime, spinning out of control.

Resisting to protect our own

The evening of 3 January, we realized that if there was any truth to Israeli war minister Ehud Barak’s words, it’s that this invasion will be a long one. At approximately 9:15pm local time Israeli forces entered the Strip from three locations. From the east of Gaza City and the northern towns of Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya, tanks rolled into the Palestinian residential areas while Israeli F-16s created a cover from the sky. At the same time, Israeli tanks and infantry troops entered Rafah from the southeast, while tanks shelling and artillery fire rained on the Mintar area of Gaza City. Israeli warships were simultaneously barraging Gaza City from the sea. The entire Strip was surrounded and being heavily pounded by Israeli missiles and artillery fire.

Israel Elite Brigade Toll Climbs;Gaza Quagmire Deepens

Posted by seumasach on January 6, 2009

Al-Manar TV

06/01/2009 …It’s the eleventh day of the Israeli offensive on Gaza and the fourth day of the ground operation. 11 days have passed and Israel has so failed to achieve any clear objective; a reason to dump all calls for ceasefire. On the ninth of January, PA chief Mahmoud Abbas’s term ends and on the twentieth of January US President Barack Obama takes the oath. Time is not in Israel’s favor as elections are a few weeks ahead. The political confusion has been reflected recently on the battleground in Gaza. Israeli elite soldiers are getting killed, at least 3 on Monday night alone and settlers are still haunted by Palestinian resistance rockets. Practically, nothing has changed in Gaza for Israel to save face. The stigma of Israel’s blood thirst in Gaza, however, adds another paragraph to the books of Israel’s reference to massacres.
