Israel accused of using illegal white phosphorus shells in Gaza

Posted by seumasach on January 12, 2009

The phosporus that the Israelis deny using is the the stuff you see on Newsnight, the rather spectacular white  plumes.

Telegraph

11th January, 2009

White phosphorus is an incendiary material that causes severe burns when it comes in contact with human skin and its use in conflict zones is restricted inside civilian areas. Syria called on the UN to investigate the claim.

Human Rights Watch said its researchers witnessed the use of the materiel on Saturday and Sunday in Gaza City and Jabalia refugee camps, both built-up areas.

The Israeli military, which refuses to comment on the types of munitions it is using in the conflict, rejected the accusations. “There is no use of white phosphorus,” a spokeswoman said. “Everything we use is according to international law,” Marc Garlasco, senior military analyst at Human Rights Watch said: “Israel should not use it in Gaza’s densely populated areas.”

Who will save Israel from itself?

One by one the justifications given by Israel for its latest war in Gaza are unravelling.

The argument that this is a purely defensive war, launched only after Hamas broke a six-month ceasefire has been challenged, not just by observers in the know such as Jimmy Carter, the former US president who helped facilitate the truce, but by centre-right Israeli intelligence think tanks.

Reporting from Washington and Rafah, Egypt — Some of them are said to be big enough to accommodate railroad cars. They may reach a depth of 60 feet, and are reported to be equipped with cables and electric motors that move food, fuel — and probably some of the heaviest rockets that Hamas aims at Israel.

Jordan urges world pressure on Israel to stop Gaza attacks – Summary

Posted by seumasach on January 11, 2009

11th January, 2009
Amman – Jordanian Foreign Minister Salah Bashir on Sunday summoned ambassadors of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and urged them to put pressure Israel to comply with the UN resolution and halt its offensive in the Gaza Strip. “The international community, particularly the five permanent countries of the UN Security Council, bears under the UN charter the responsibility of protecting world peace and security,” a Foreign Ministry statement quoted Bashir as telling the envoys of the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China.

“Israel is committing flagrant violations of international law by ignoring Resolution 1860 and going ahead with its aggression, using universally prohibited weapons,” Bashir added.

Israel has rejected the resolution which calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, Jordan’s King Abdullah II discussed the rising tensions with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and “stressed the responsibility of the world community in forcing Israel to … stop its aggression and allow entry of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people,” a royal court statement said.

Abbas made a stopover in Amman after meeting Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak in Cairo on his way back home from New York where he attended the UN Security Council deliberations that produced Resolution 1860.

King Abdullah “underscored the importance of coming up with a unified Arab attitude that foils the Israeli schemes and helps the launching of a real world effort to find a solution for the conflict on the basis of ending the occupation and setting up an independent Palestinian state,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the Jordanian government came under fresh attack in the lower house of parliament on Sunday for its failure to sever ties with Israel and dismiss the Israeli ambassador from Amman.

Prime Minister Nader Dahabi has said that all options are open to Jordan including a “review” of ties with Israel.

Chinese Central Bank to Test Program to Settle Trade in Yuan Rather Than Dollars
Naked Capitalism

10th January, 2009

While it would be easy to dismiss this move by the People’s Bank of China to inch away from dollar based invoicing, the fact is that the use of other currencies for denominating trade transactions has been on the rise. We cited this Globe and Mail story back in February:

The chief executive of jewellery giant De Beers SA made waves this week when he suggested the global diamond industry consider pricing the shiny gems in a currency other than the U.S. dollar.

Where have our friends gone?

Haaretz

11th January, 2009
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked to speak with his Israeli counterpart Ehud Olmert just before the start of Israel’s offensive in Gaza. Olmert avoided Erdogan because he did not want to tell the Turkish premier about the coming attack. He did not want to be in Menachem Begin’s situation when Begin spoke to Egyptian president Anwar Sadat one time in 1981 and did not tell him Israel was about to attack Iraq’s nuclear reactor. As a result, Erdogan was enraged and insulted. Turkish sources say Erdogan’s campaign of insults against Israel in recent weeks is a reaction to this.
