WASHINGTON – Increasingly distressed over the possible consequences of Israel’s recent steps to punish the Palestinian Authority (PA) and consolidate its hold on the West Bank, a number of prominent voices here are urging President Barack Obama to exert real pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reverse course.

Objetivos del viaje de Meshal a Gaza
9th December, 2012

The recent hostilities between the Gaza Strip and Israel have to be viewed in context of a broader geopolitical chessboard. The events in Gaza are tied to Syria and the US’s regional maneuvers against Iran and its regional alliance system.

The Palestine’s bid for non-member observer status in the United Nations is certain to succeed. The requisite two-thirds support at today’s voting in the UNGA is a foregone conclusion.

Hamas leader Meshaal’s thanks to Iran for its crucial military support to Gaza is one of the most striking and unlikely responses to Israel’s failed offensive. Indeed, its the response that most underlines their failure. Israel would have sought to consolidate Hamas’ reorientation away from Syria and the Axis of Resistance and help to cohere a Muslim Brotherhood block amenable to Zionist and Western interests.

Interesting to see what happens to Hamas’ links with Qatar now! Or is Meshaal helping to set up Iran. Hamas has already said it will stand aside in the event of an Israeli attack on Iran.

Even as nations like Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt protest the Western-backed and facilitated destruction of Gaza by Israel, they, along with these very Western nations they protest, including Israel, continue coordinating efforts with each other to topple and destroy Syria.

Once again Israël attacks Gaza, and the international media relays the images of desolation. But the outrage provoked by these daily horrors must not prevent us from analysing the situation and understanding its aims. Thierry Meyssan anwers the question.

A ground invasion may be imminent. But Bibi may – once again – be biting more of a gefilte fish than he can chew. Don’t expect any condemnation from the cowardly petro-monarchies of the Gulf Counter-Revolution Club (GCC), previously known as Gulf Cooperation Council. And don’t expect any condemnation from all those Western “Friends of Syria” who get so outraged by the Assad regime killing “its own people”.

So many wars to launch, so little time. When you’re the political leader of the most militarized nation on the planet – as is the case with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu – you gotta find ways to play with your toys.
