The US president Barack Obama has made up his mind about the American troop presence in Afghanistan beyond end-2014. The figure is 9800. But the figure will come down by half by the end of next year and by end-2016, all troops will have been withdrawn, leaving only the security squads that ensure the protection of the American embassy. BEIRUT – A potentially important diplomatic development underway in the Middle East, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz Monday, is that Washington is “tending towards cooperating with the soon-to-be-formed Palestinian unity government, even if Hamas as an organization does not accept the conditions of the Mideast Quartet to recognize Israel, honor previous agreements and abandon violence.”
