Opposition in Syria slams coalition in exile ahead of peace talks

Posted by seumasach on May 29, 2013

The mess in the West only gets worse. They tried to create a respectable front organisation for the rebel rabble, but in vain. They’ll have to come up with someone to negotiate at the peace conference. Otherwise they face undisguised defeat and humiliation.

Orlando Sentinel

29th May, 2013

ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Opposition groups on the ground in Syria slammed their counterparts in exile for undermining the rebellion and lacking legitimacy, laying bare chronic divisions among the foes of PresidentBashar al-Assad ahead of a planned peace conference.

Russia seeks to restrain “hotheads”

Posted by seumasach on May 28, 2013

“Those systems by definition cannot be used by militant groups on the battlefield,” Ryabkov said. “We consider this delivery a factor of stabilization. We believe that moves like this one to a great degree restrain some hotheads from escalating the conflict to the international scale, from involving external forces.”

An unmistakeable reference to British foreign secretary, William Hague.

UK, France stand alone behind “rebels”

Posted by seumasach on May 28, 2013

“EU nations agreed to bring the arms embargo on the Syrian opposition to an end. This was the outcome that the United Kingdom wanted. It was a difficult decision for some countries but it was necessary and right to reinforce international efforts to reach a diplomatic solution(sic) to the conflict in Syria,” Hague said.

Syria Peace Conference: Who is really interested?

Posted by seumasach on May 27, 2013

“It’s clear that the US has basically moved towards the Russian position on the Geneva communiqué, which is where we were nearly a year ago,” Yezid Sayigh, Syria expert and senior associate at the Carnegie Middle East Centre, told Ahram Online.

“If it (the opposition) refuses to attend, it may lose the political recognition of the Friends of Syria and receive no further material assistance,” especially from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Sayigh says. Consulting with these countries for influence in the SNC may leave the opposition “without clear, unified, and unconditional political support from either,” he argues.

It does appear that the “opposition” will be “persuaded” to attend

Al Ahram

26th May, 2013

Amid a flurry of meetings, it is still largely undecided whether an international peace conference aimed at resolving the conflict in Syria will take place in June.
