The US president Barack Obama has made up his mind about the American troop presence in Afghanistan beyond end-2014. The figure is 9800. But the figure will come down by half by the end of next year and by end-2016, all troops will have been withdrawn, leaving only the security squads that ensure the protection of the American embassy. Before clinching the deal, Iran required Meshaal to publicly endorse Iran’s policy in Syria and his support for Bashar Assad.
The Hamas politburo chief accordingly stated in Doha Thursday night that he “welcomed the position of Tehran toward Syria,” adding: “We will never forget Syrian President Bashar Al- Assad’s support for the Palestinian nation.”

Syria’s High Constitutional Court announced that only three candidacy applications for the presidential elections had garnered the support of at least 35 MPs.
The three validated candidates are:
Maher Abdel Hafez Hajjar MP (Communist leanings)
Hassan Abdallah al-Nouri (former Minister of State for Administrative Development Affairs, and a member of the internal opposition)
Bashar al-Assad (outgoing President of the Republic, President of the secular Baath Party).
The election will be held on June 3.
The new Electoral Code provides each candidate with funding, personal police protection, and access to media.

Edward Bernays once famously promoted the “conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses” through the use of propaganda, which he considered an “important element in democratic society”.[1] Today’s so-called “liberal democracies” are testament to Bernays’ assertion. The “father of public relations” demonstrated early on that propaganda can be used for many different purposes, from selling cars to selling wars. Especially the latter has become the primary task of media in the United States and other NATO countries in recent years. With Iraq still burning, Western media played a decisive role in turning Libya and Syria into failed states as well. The propaganda was never particularly sophisticated. After “Saddam has weapons of mass destruction” came “Gaddafi is killing his own people” and eventually “Assad is like Hitler”. But mainstream media reporting got even worse during the Ukraine crisis and this could have unforeseen consequences for those in power.

While NATO member states and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC ) persist in presenting Syria as a dictatorship, the country continues its reforms. On June 3, it will elect its President of the Republic, while the war continues to ravage a part of its territory. Damascus is doing everything possible to ensure that this election is democratic and blameless, while its attackers have instructed their media to minimize the coverage and their jihadists to disrupt the procedings.

“All global and regional indicators underline how Assad is there to stay. Change will come only under his leadership or his guidance. The sooner the United States realizes this the better for all concerned parties.”

Long gone are the days when the so-called “Friends of Syria” could plausibly claim that two thirds of Syria was controlled by rebel forces, that Damascus was under siege and that the days of President Bashar al-Assad were numbered.
