Former US envoy to the UN John Bolton says Washington has suffered a humiliating defeat in its drive against Iran’s nuclear activities.

In a Friday interview with BBC Persian, Bolton said Washington’s efforts to curb Tehran’s nuclear achievements have come to naught as Tehran has successfully managed to defend its national interests.

Craig Murray’s Blog

One of the purposes of this blog is to reconnect my readers with our heritage of British radical thought. These ideas were very much part of the intellectual mainstream, but in my lifetime that mainstream has been drastically narrowed by the control of media and of education by the very interests and methods that will be described in this entry.

The Obama Spectacle- History, Hypocrisy, and Empire

Now that the spectacle of the Barack Obama coronation as the “American” Empire’s first African-American emperor has run its course, and many, many millions of dollars have been spent on self-adulation by the power elite of this nation, the huddled masses will necessarily be compelled to return to a system of no universal, single-payer health care, increasing joblessness, insatiable corporate / military greed, homelessness, de facto racial disparity & discord, police brutality, a burgeoning U.S. prison population, and endless U.S. wars abroad. For yet again, this nation will have done what it all too often does: perverted its promise, including the dream of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., into a hypocritical nightmare of gigantic and historic proportions.

Russia stops US on road to Afghanistan

Precise, quick, deadly – the skills of a soldier are modest. But then, US Central Command chief General David Petraeus is more than a soldier. The world is getting used to him as somewhere more than halfway down the road to becoming a statesman. Sure, there may be warfare’s seduction over him still, but he is expected to be aware of the political realities of the two wars he conducts, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

That is why he tripped last Tuesday when he said while on a visit to Pakistan that the American military had secured agreements to move supplies to Afghanistan from the north, easing the heavy reliance on the transit route through Pakistan. “There have been agreements reached, and there are transit lines now and transit agreements for commercial goods and services in particular that include several countries in the Central Asian states and Russia,” Petraeus said.

NATO: the Imperial Pitbull

One of the deceptive clichés of Western accounts of post World War II history is that NATO was constructed  as a defensive arrangement to block the threat of  a Soviet attack on Western Europe.  This is false. It is true that Western propaganda played up the Soviet menace, but many key U.S. and Western European statesmen recognized that a Soviet invasion was not a real threat.  The Soviet Union had been devastated, and while in possession of a large army it was exhausted and needed time for recuperation. The United States was riding high, the war had revitalized its economy, it suffered no war damage, and it had the atomic bomb in its arsenal, which it had displayed to  the Soviet Union by killing a quarter of  a million Japanese civilians at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hitting the Soviet Union before it recovered or had atomic weapons was discussed in Washington, even if rejected in favor of “containment,”  economic warfare, and other forms of  destabilization. NSC 68, dated April 1950, while decrying the great Soviet menace, explicitly called for a program of destabilization aimed at regime change in that country, finally achieved in 1991.

Russia deny NATO military supply lines

MOSCOW, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) — “No official documents were submitted to Russia’s permanent mission in NATO certifying that Russia had authorized the United States and NATO to transport military supplies across the country,” Alexei Maslov was quoted commenting on some media reports, which cited Commander of the U.S. Central Command Gen. David Petraeus assaying that an agreement on alternative transit routes had been reached with Russia.

Obama’s election doesn’t mean peace is breaking out all over – far from it

As a new administration takes power in Washington and the promise of “change” is in the air, we have to ask ourselves: when-oh-when is it coming? When will the dam break on the sclerotic foreign policy thinking of the past eight – heck, the past 50 – years? Read the rest of this entry »

Lightning, Earthquakes & Hurricanes

The earth itself provides many valuable analogies for massive dislocation in the relief of grand energy differentials. In the air, vast differentials between cloud structures in their electrical charge result in sudden lightning bursts as the release. In the air also, vast differentials between high cool masses and low rising warm masses result in powerful ongoing storms in hurricanes. In the ground, more accurately the earth plates, vast pressure builds from the movement of such plates, often with one plate flowing underneath another, leading to massive earthquakes and tremors. We had yet another earthquake in Costa Rica last week, enough to register a 6.2 at epicenter and sufficient to cause my ceiling light fixtures to swing several inches to and fro. In the ground, subsidence from natural gravitation forces or mine activity or water aquifer flow can produce a vacuum of pressure, leading to vast sinkholes like often seen in Florida. Tsunamis are extremely powerful waves that deliver sudden floods, but they are just earthquakes with much of the vast energy transferred into ocean waves. Read the rest of this entry »

More tricks and hot air from across the Atlantic leave Europeans in the cold

A hurried resolution to the Ukraine-Russia gas war was reached during a visit to Moscow by Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko to meet with her Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin this week. Ukraine finally agreed to pay higher European prices for Russian gas from 2010, after a 20 per cent discount in 2009.
