End game for Benghazi rebels as Libyan tribes prepare to weigh in?

Franklin Lamb

Counterpunch

2nd August, 2011

On July 30, the day before this 97.5 per cent  Muslim country began the holy month of Ramadan, NATO spokesperson Roland Lavoie has been lamely attempting to explain to the press at the Rexis Hotel and internationally, why NATO was forced to bomb three Tripoli TV towers at the Libyan Broadcasting Authority, killing three journalists/technicians and wounding 15 others.  Like most people currently in central Tripoli, this observer was awakened at 1:50 a.m. by the first of a series of nine blasts, three of which I watched from my balcony as they happened, and which seemed to be about 800 yards away as I saw one TV tower being blown apart. On the four lanes’ divided highway adjacent to my hotel and below my balcony, that runs along the sea front, I could see two cars frantically swerving left and right as they sped along, presumably trying to avoid a NATO rocket, fearing they themselves might be targeted.

Muslims have been encouraged to cease hostilities during the month of Ramadan. Nothing significant should be expected to happen in Libya at the military level until August 28. But who benefits from the respite?

All quiet on the Libyan front?

Posted by seumasach on August 2, 2011

Major developments are taking place in Benghazi around which there is a news blackout. NATO, of course, know what they’re involved in there but aren’t telling us.

Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey

2nd August, 2011

How odd. Western news agencies have gone quiet about Libya. Not a peep! You could hear a pin drop. Is something going on? Rather than copy and paste lies and hype and misquotations of the truth let us see what is really going on using real sources from within Libya itself. For those wannabe hacks who have tried to get my sources, find your own!

Les musulmans sont invités à cesser les hostilités durant le mois de Ramadan. Rien de significatif ne devrait donc avoir lieu au plan militaire en Libye jusqu’au 28 août. Mais à qui profite le temps qui passe ?

Libya, where NATO loses its way

Posted by seumasach on August 1, 2011

Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey

Pravda

31st July, 2011

It is by now patently obvious that in Libya, NATO has violated every rule in the book, has violated international law, has broken the Geneva Conventions, has breached diplomatic conventions, has insulted the United Nations Organization and fundamentally, has even violated its own charter. Why? In three letters, oil.

Libya rebels say Younis killers were ‘Islamist element’

Posted by seumasach on July 30, 2011

The ultimate fiasco is unfolding before us. NATO are keeping dangerous company with these CIA, salafist networks or is it the CIA, Salafist networks which are keeping dangerous company with NATO. Of course, NATO kept similar company in Kosovo, but at that time they were still able to spin everything to order. Now there game is falling apart- time for Hague to answer for himself in the House of Commons: was he warned about the criminal connections of these groups before he appointed them as Libya’s official representatives? Anyway he can only look away in horror as these words are written on the wall

“We want Muammar to come back! We want the green flag back!”

Guardian

30th July, 2011

The gunmen who shot dead the Libyan rebels’ military chief Abdul Fatah Younis were members of an Islamist-linked militia allied to the campaign to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi, according to a National Transitional Council minister.

Abdel Fatah Younis assassination creates division among Libya rebels

Posted by seumasach on July 30, 2011

“Mahmoud al-Nacua, the newly appointed diplomatic envoy of the NTC in London, refused to comment.”

Not even a tribute to their military commander or condolences to his family.

“Misrata’s military spokesman joined the city’s ruling council in emphasising that its army units did not take orders from Benghazi.”

The West and our own William Hague recognise the NTC but not the rebels in Misrata.

“In Brussels, Nato officials stressed that they were not fully in the picture on the circumstances of the murder, and that the military alliance did not want to be seen to be speaking for the opposition to Gaddafi.”

The opposition to Gaddafi is the “sole legitimate government” of Libya according the British government and most of the other NATO powers.

A “fractious coalition” is a very diplomatic term for this crowd.

Guardian

29th July, 2011

The fractious coalition fighting to oust Muammar Gaddafi was plunged into disarray on Friday as the mysterious death of the rebels’ army commander sparked anger from his powerful tribe and distrust among those loyal to the cause.
