“What Ulyukaev is saying is that after wasting eight months rejecting the Russian proposals out of hand, the Europeans have suddenly indicated in the last few weeks that they might be prepared to accept them after all.
If this is really so, and if what Ulyukaev says is true, then it is the best evidence to date that the Western powers have indeed finally given up on their Ukrainian adventure, and have accepted that the grandiose geopolitical objectives they set themselves when they drafted the Association Agreement and backed the Maidan coup are unachievable, and that the time has now come to draw a line under the whole affair.”

The real Masters of the Universe in the U.S. are no weathermen, but arguably they’re starting to feel which way the wind is blowing.
History may signal it all started with this week’s trip to Sochi, led by their paperboy, Secretary of State John Kerry, who met with Foreign Minister Lavrov and then with President Putin.

Just when the left intelligencia thought they had found a Manichean struggle they could really get their teeth into Kerry goes swanning into Moscow to exchange high fives with Lavrov, metaphorically speaking, and in the blink of an eye the much-vaunted New Cold War is dead. The conflict with Russia was invaluable in covering the retreat in Syria and Iran: now a bit more rough wooing of China with some gratuitous and utterly vacuous threats thrown in is covering the retreat from Moscow. Obama really wants a close engagement with both Russia and China and the capital inflows and the easing of the military budget which will flow from it, buts wants to make it clear that there will be “consequences” if his overtures are rejected. He also has one eye for the various dead-enders and nostalgics at home, in Wall Street, in the military-industrial complex, the lobbies and, above all ,the media who still haven’t grasped that the unipolar moment has passed. All in all, Obama is playing a masterful game in steering the good ship America and, consequently, the whole of humanity to safer waters, a journey which could culminate in new beginnings and much needed national and global reconstruction.

There is no need to second guess the identity of the third party present in the room in Sochi on Tuesday when the U.S. secretary of state John Kerry met the Russian leaders. Most certainly, if a strong stimulus is to be accounted for as working on the U.S. president Barack Obama’s cerebral mind prompting him to break the ice in the relations with Russia, it is the Sino-Russian entente that has emerged in global politics. See my blog Obama’s overture to Putin has paid off.)

Sputnik
Head of the foreign-affairs committee of the Russian State Duma Alexei Pushkov claims that Washington fears its attempts to isolate Russia from the Western world are failing as seen in the US reaction to Czech President Milos Zeman’s plan to visit Moscow’s WWII parade celebrations in May.

Op-ed News
15th January, 2015
Russia executed a bold move on January 14, one that was largely unanticipated. It shows the level of disgust with both the coup-based Ukraine government and the European Union leaders and their small state followers.
Ukraine is finished as a supply route for Russian natural gas headed for European Union countries. EU countries get 25% to 30% of their natural gas from the Ukraine pipeline. The gas transiting Ukraine will be diverted to the recently announced Russia-Turkey pipeline. The Turks will create a portal at the Greek border where Europeans can purchase natural gas. The pipeline will be complete in 2017.

Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
T.S.Elliot
Those who have been following the analysis put forward in these columns may be stunned but will not be surprised by Obama’s announcement ending the US standoff with Cuba. As I wrote almost two years ago:
“You don’t have to regard Barack Obama as the the embodiment of ultimate virtue to support the recent shift towards a certain realism in Washington. He has declared an end to “war without end”. It doesn’t matter that this is only an accommodation to new realities and not the reflection of some inherent goodness in the US leader. What matters is that he is aware of reality and is accommodating to it: this is what leadership is about. He has recognised that the policy options chosen by his administration have not worked. They could have worked perhaps but they didn’t . The government of Bashar-al Assad has not collapsed in the face of Western sponsored Islamist movements and is not going to. The eurozone is not going to collapse to accommodate the US dollar. America is not going to dictate the course of world events over the coming years. The New World Order, at least not the one envisaged by Washington, London and Tel Aviv, will not come into being.Let us then applaud Barack Obama for providing us with change we might even believe in: a shift in Washington towards an acceptance of the facts, of a return to planet earth.”

Whilst Cod War 1 was a tragedy, Cold War 2 is definitely a farce. While Kiev talks to Moscow for purposes of survival, the clowns running the West talk sanctions. The proponents of globalisation want to retreat into their bunkers now that globalisation is no longer going their way. Still, there is hope that this sorry spectacle may be brought to an end if Wagenknecht’s remarkable Bundestag speech is anything to go by.

Orban is a neocon who has “gone native” much to the chagrin of McCain. But this is one of the prime symptoms of imperial decline: the empire can no longer control its vassals.

Obama’s anti-Russian turn is devoid of strategic sense. He can’t court China at the expense of Russia as Nixon did: China and Russia are now inseparable allies and increasingly so in the face of Western hostility. However, anti-Russian rhetoric does serve as a cover for Washington’s close engagement with China which includes permitting China to exchange its dollar holdings for real assets, especially artificially underpriced gold, but also real estate, industrial and port facilities inside the USA.

The India-Russia annual summitry had lately become a tepid affair — something like the anniversary of a boring marriage. How often can an aged couple arouse passion? But the upcoming event bringing President Vladimir Putin to Delhi next month promises to be exciting. Geopolitics may act like an aphrodisiac.
