ECB warns on sovereign debt crisis

A top European Central Bank policymaker has intensified warnings of a “full-blown sovereign debt crisis” unless governments take ambitious steps to bring public finances under control, saying the UK, US and Japan faced an even greater challenge than the eurozone.

Dollar surges on Europe downgrades

It’s working! What a great idea having your own rating agencies- one minute you can triple AAA rate a junk CDO, the next you can trash competing currencies. You can even maintain UK government bonds at AAA rating! The battle for Europe is heating up- look out for retaliation soon.

The dollar surged to a new 11-month peak against a basket of its major counterparts overnight, broadly boosted by mounting sovereign credit concerns in Europe.
Yesterday, Standard & Poor’s ratings agency downgraded Greece’s government debt to junk status amid mounting concerns about its ability to finance its soaring debt.

NATO countries begin ‘Brilliant Mariner’ naval exercise

A large fleet of warships, submarines, frigates and aircraft from 10 NATO countries and one non-NATO member has congregated here to take part in the ‘Brilliant Mariner’ maritime exercise in the Baltic Sea.

Zone orientale de l’OTAN : fermeture du ciel aux avions civils durant les exercices militaires

Suite à l’éruption du volcan Eyjafjöll, la fermeture de l’espace aérien dans la zone orientale de l’OTAN a été décidée sur la base de recommandations infondées de l’organisme britannique de surveillance. Celles-ci ont été immédiatement rejetées par la Russie, mais appliquées par les États de l’OTAN à leur seule aviation civile, tandis que l’Alliance faisait voler ses chasseurs bombardiers, pourtant théoriquement plus vulnérables. Les vérifications ont été retardées par les autorités, malgré l’impatience des compagnies aériennes. En définitive, la gestion de cette catastrophe naturelle a été délibérément catastrophiste.

Just as LEAP/E2020 anticipated many months ago, and in contrast to the reports coming out of the media and the « experts » during these past few weeks, Greece really has the Eurozone behind it to give support and credibility (especially concerning good management in the future, the only guarantee of an escape from a damnable cycle of growing public deficits (1)). There will not be, then, any Greek default of payment even if the commotion over the Greek situation really is an indication of a growing awareness that money to finance the huge Western public debt is becoming increasingly difficult to find: a situation now « untenable » as a recent report of the Bank of International Settlements underlined.

UE relinquishes inter-parliamentary control over its defense policy

“As a result of this sleight of hand, we are heading – without any debate in the countries concerned – towards a new constitutional framework where European policies will be overseen by …. the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. In the meantime, only national parliamentary controls will be exerted, which is insufficient and may open the door to various types of power abuses.”

On 31 March 2010, without prior notice, the ten member States of the Western European Union (WEU) announced thedissolution of the structure. All the administrative organs will be shut down by the end of June 2010 at the latest. This decision was precipitated by the 13 March announcement of the United Kingdom’s imminent withdrawal from the Brussels Treaty (1948).

Berlin appears divided over the presence of US nuclear warheads

As Russia and the US signed a treaty to reduce their nuclear arsenals in Prague on Thursday, the German government was divided over when the remaining US warheads should be removed from German soil. The removal of the arms is part of the coalition treaty between Chancellor Merkel’s Christian Democrats and the Free Democrats.
