The end of the leadership of traditional powers will bring about global chaos in 2013, with the “world after” beginning to emerge.

Oh, dear! The trouble is that Britain is already on the periphery of Europe and looking to strengthen its engagement with the USA. It will soon be adrift somewhere in mid-Atlantic.

A year ago it was the eurozone that was heading at high speed towards the cliff edge. Fears that Europe’s monetary union was about to break up were commonplace. Spanish, Italian and Greek official borrowing costs were soaring. Mario Draghi, the new European Central Bank president, had ruled out acting as a lender of last resort to governments.

La scène se passe lundi après-midi au Parlement européen à Bruxelles. La commission des affaires économiques et monétaires auditionne Wolfgang Schäuble et Pierre Moscovici, les ministres des Finances de l’Allemagne et de la France sur la situation économique de leur pays respectif et, bien sûr, la crise de la zone euro. Dans ce tableau charmant de la démocratie européenne en marche, une fausse note : la présidente de cette commission est Britannique, en l’occurrence la libérale démocrate Sharon Bowles. Comment l’élue d’un pays qui a refusé la monnaie unique et n’entend pas l’adopter peut-elle ainsi s’immiscer dans des questions qui ne la regardent absolument pas ?

It is not coincidental that Hollande is leading the way in both an imperial policy in Syria and a central bank funded bailout of European banks. An Atlanticist France is a serious problem for Europe whose disarray is only mitigated by the impending implosion of US/UK.

The most recent European Union summit exposed deep differences between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande. Berlin wants Brussels to be bestowed with greater power over national budgets and Paris is calling for an end to austerity. The dispute threatens to intensify the euro crisis.
