A total of 68 per cent think the single currency will not survive, according to a survey by Harris Interactive for Metro.

A third of Britons believe the euro has less than a year left, while almost two thirds say it will be gone in less than five years.

A third are more optimistic about the euro’s chances of riding out the turmoil, saying it would survive ‘for the foreseeable future’.

Six per cent expect it to remain in place for longer than five years but believe it will have to be dissolved eventually. The research also found that seven in ten believe that, if the single currency fails, there will be a bad effect on the British economy – with 18 per cent foreseeing a ‘strong’ impact.

The poll was conducted online among 1,049 adults aged between 16 and 64 between January 17 and 19.
