The bullies that Labour has unleashed

Posted by seumasach on January 19, 2009

What is noticeable now that so many of Labour’s laws have come into force is the increase of pettiness, bullying and loss of humanity in local officials, government agencies and the various new breeds of wardens and community officers who patrol the streets looking to fine those who feed the birds and put up notices for their lost cat.

It is the detail of stories that reach the local press that tells us of the vast change in the relationship between the man in the street and authority. A new and – to me – alien element of harshness has entered the equation, and I believe we are going to see a lot more of it.

More battles ahead in Russia’s ‘gas war’

Posted by seumasach on January 19, 2009

Asia Times

17th January, 2009

The cause of any war is difficult to pinpoint. There is always more than one cause. And they could be just causes or ugly causes. There is no objective criterion except that the right cause is constructive while the wrong one is destructive, but then, people define by their standards.

Of course, there is a time for all wars. Finally, there is the problem of war. The same god who sanctioned so much war and violence in the Old Testament bursts into the human situation in the New Testament with a huge promise of hope, forgiveness and reconciliation. We call this “grace”.

By these reckonings, Russia’s 13-day “gas war” with Ukraine (from January 1 to January13) was largely atypical. True, its causes were not in any serious dispute, but its timing was simply awful, right in the middle of Orthodox Christmas. Russia has a problem with “grace” and could take a lesson or two from China on how to reconcile contradictions involving neighbors. Russia’s image surely took a beating in the Western media, which eagerly puffed up the controversy.

Unsurprisingly, the ubiquitous Americans promptly put on their trans-Atlantic leadership mantle and appeared on the scene to finger-point at the unreliable, unscrupulous, venal Russian “bullies”. Anders Aslund of the Peterson Institute came up with a most ingenious thesis that actually the Russians were conspiring to make Ukraine a corrupt country, destabilize it and make it unsafe for democracy.

But it was most certainly a war and the Russians likely won, as Old Europe did not take the cue from Washington. The win remains indeterminate, though. That is because it has been ultimately about geopolitics, where you don’t conclusively win and can only avoid losing, and as China’s People’s Daily newspaper noted, Russia cannot turn a blind eye towards “NATO’s [North Atlantic Treaty Organization] greedy expansion” and the dispute between the United States and Russia will only become “more and more intense”.

Divided Arab Leaders Hold Reconciliation Meeting in Kuwait

Posted by seumasach on January 19, 2009

Al-Manar

19/01/2009 … And on the 24th day on the Israeli deadliest war against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and a few hours after a ceasefire was announced in the besieged strip marking another victory for the Resistance pattern in the region, the Arab leaders were “finally” able to hold an “Arab Summit” amid an unprecedented Arab division.

All the Arabs, including the so-called “moderate” ones, were represented in the Kuwait Summit, days after they rejected to participate in a Qatari-suggested summit over Gaza, resulting in the failure of reaching the needed quorum. Meanwhile, the summit was marked by a reconciliation lunch meeting in which Saudi King gathered leaders of Egypt, Syria, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait. A Syrian well-informed source told Al-Manar that the meeting was frank and sincere. The source noted that the mentioned reconciliation meeting constitutes a first step towards discussing various Arab issues in an attempt to reach common principles.

Entretien de Thierry Meyssan au « Courrier d’Algérie »

Voltairenet

19th January, 2009

Can you imagine that even some Palestinians [or better to use Fatah in today’s terms] are saying:

Qatar is playing with fire, the Emir [of Qatar] crossed all the red lines.

Do you really want to see the outrage of the pro-Israel alliance? Then see this report on Al-Hariri newspaper Al-Mustaqbal saying:

The axis of resistance is a lie… the true name is “axis of Iran”.

I don’t know, how Hariri will explain this to the Emir of Qatar in the future?

Israel Resumes Killing Civilians despite “Ceasefire” Declaration

Posted by seumasach on January 18, 2009

18/01/2009 As its history has always showed that it never binds itself to a treaty, neither respects any decision, Israel on Sunday resumed attacking the Palestinian civilians despite its unilateral ceasefire announced by its Prime Minister Ehud Olmert late Saturday.

An eight-year old girl, identified as Nagham Al-Masri, was killed on Sunday in Beit Hanoun after Israeli occupation troops shot her northern Gaza with three of her family members. And another 20-year-old Palestinian was shot dead by occupation soldiers in the southern Gaza Strip, becoming the first fatality since Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire.

Israel shelling Gaza despite ceasefire

Posted by seumasach on January 18, 2009

PressTV

18th January, 2009

An Israeli helicopter hovering above the Gaza City continues to carry out fresh strike despite a unilateral ceasefire announced by Tel Aviv.

Press TV broadcast live images of an Israeli helicopter hovering above the city and dropping its white phosphorous bombs on the city during a report by our correspondent Akram al-Sattari in the city.

Columns of smoke could be seen rising from the targeted neighborhoods on the 23rd day of the Israeli offensive against the impoverished coastal silver which has so far killed around 1,200 Palestinians and injured 6000 others.

A large number of the victims are women and children, according to figures by the UN and Palestinian medics.
