Abelardo Moreno, Cuban Ambassador to the United Nations expressed this Wednesday at the Security Council the strong condemn of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) to Israel for its attacks to the Gaza Strip.

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 7(acn) — Abelardo Moreno, in his speech in an open debate on the Middle East situation, highlighted the profound disappointment of the organization he represents for the incapacity of the Council to fulfil its responsibility of keeping international peace and security.

The Cuban diplomat pointed out that the land invasion started by Israel in Gaza challenges the international community demands for a cease-fire and to the regional and international diplomatic efforts to solve the crisis.

Moreno stressed the profound sorrow of NAM for the losses of innocent lives- over 570 Palestinian civilians, including children and women, and the huge destruction of properties and infrastructure, due to the Israeli attacks.

He added that to NAM this unacceptable aggression against the civil population is a grave violation of the most elementary human rights, and also said that the Israeli government’s actions intensify the circle of violence and threatens international security, as well as the frail peace process between the two parties involved.

NAM called Israel to stop immediately all military actions and violence, while demanding to follow the IV Geneva Covenant, about the Protection to Civilians in War Times, from August 12th 1949.

The Cuban Ambassador pointed out that due to the indiscriminate bombings and the severe humanitarian crisis that is happening in Gaza, NAM calls to protect immediately the civilian population.

The continuous closing of the border crossings, reminded the diplomat, blocks the access to humanitarian aid, and stressed that NAM is convinced that the solution to this conflict is not a military one. He also underscored the Palestinian people’s right to have free determination and sovereignty in its independent Palestine State, based in its 1967 borders and with West Jerusalem as its capital. #
