One of the lesser known mysteries of modern times is what really happened at Watergate. The official story is told in “All the President’s Men” but the story goes deeper down the rabbit hole.
The recently departed Mark Felt has been pushed by Bob Woodward as the name of “Deep Throat” , but other investigative journalists and academics have questioned this.
Woodward himself said he did not know Deep Throat’s motives.
The cover of integrity and honesty do not seem to hold much wash in Washington.
The motive given out by the authors of ” The Silent Coup” by Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin who write at www.watergate.com is at least plausible.
Nixon who came to power as a rabid anti-communist with a certain amount of support from the old boy network in the military/ media /
industrial complex; strayed off-message, with the Vietnamisation policy, that of replacing US troops with Vietnamese soldiers, visiting China and hugging Chairman Mao. This was all too much of a U-turn for these virulent war mongers of US murder incorporated. This was the real reason that Nixon was set up. Others say it was an institutional battle between the FBI and the Whitehouse.
This realplayer interview between Klingman and Colodyn, is perhaps the most convincing version of the silent right wing coup.
The story is a timely reminder of the possible fate of the ‘centrist’ president elect Obama. Yet circumstances have changed so much. The Communist Party of China is no longer feared ideologically as much as it is feared financially. These seas are stormy and foggy. Definitely worth keeping an eye on.
