Groups of activists are organizing a pair of local protests in downtown Rochester and Palmyra to decry the proposed $700 billion federal bailout of troubled Wall Street financial firms.

The protests will be at 5 p.m. — one outside the Keating Federal Building, 100 State St., and one at the Palmyra Village Park in Wayne County. The events will coincide with a number of similar demonstrations and events scheduled for today around the country.

During the rally, participants will be asked to take out their cell phones and call a toll-free number to reach their representatives and senators in Congress.

“We are being asked to reward a bankrupt ideology that has viewed government regulation as evil despite the fact that both our history and current events demonstrate that these regulations are both necessary and critical, ” organizer Kathy Castania of Rochester said in a prepared statement.
