Mexico and Spain have called for the European Union to fully lift sanctions against Cuba, citing recent reforms by the communist-run government.

At a joint press conference on Thursday, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero called for an end to the sanctions imposed on Cuba.

Calderon said his country enjoyed full relations with Cuba, and rejected the US embargo, in place for almost 50 years. He hailed Cuban President Raul Castro for recent housing reforms, saying Cuba was on the right track.

Zapatero said, “The steps taken by Cuba have a positive tint.”
